THE IT Sports Mixed Doubles Tennis League heads into the closing fortnight of the regular season with the prospect of the closest finish in 25 years.

Only two promotion or relegation issues have so far been resolved.

Unbeaten Stamford Bridge have taken the division three title after they completed the double over Manor Civil Service. Bridge’s Antony Downing and Natalie Muir again were unbeaten in both matches.

Thew race to join them is between three teams. Bishopthorpe need only two more points after closest rivals Rowntree Park beat Sutton-on-Derwent.

Sutton are in the relegation zone after they also lost to Wigginton, for whom John Long and Sarah Blacker won 30 games.

The division one title is still up for grabs, with Dunnington leading the race after they beat Poppleton.

York’s Andy Cooke and Kathryn Maude scored 30 games against Rufforth.

Poppleton’s Michael Binns and Belinda Turnbull were too good for Fulford 2, who are locked in a relegation battle with York 2, who lost to Wetherby Castlegarth.

In division two, a final round 10-2 win by Neil Giltrap and Anne Jackson sealed the points for York against Wigginton, the side they now replace at the top.

Wheldrake will be relegated after their loss to Fulford.

With Copmanthorpe denting Poppleton’s promotion hopes, the second spot is still uncertain.

David Lloyd look favourites to take the division four title after a solid win at Cliffe.

Paul Kaye and Judy Marriott kept second-placed Appleton Roebuck in the running after they halted York’s recent good run.

Unbeaten Matt Poole and Chris Oldfield ensured Wilberfoss cannot be discounted as they beat Stillington.

A haul of 27 games from Dave Tomlinson and Kelly Holmes could not save Cliffe as they went down to Stillington, who were led by 25-game duo Graham Cookman and Jennifer Jones.

Division five is wide open after leaders Dunnington lost their first match against Heworth, whose Loch Trimingham and Louise Haritakis won their second rubber 11-1.

York are favourites for one of the relegation places after they lost to Castlegarth.

Rowntree Park moved off the foot of the table inspired by David Rogers and Sandra Robinson, who won 28 games at Cawood.

The top two teams in division eight need only one more point each to win promotion.

Leaders Sutton-on-Derwent beat Wigginton and Steve Fenton and Lou Worsnam scored 28 games against Tadcaster for Poppleton to stay on course.

There was no change in division nine after John Lintott and Rachel Clark won 29 games for leaders Riccall against Heworth.
