SILVER and gold was the currency of success for City of York Special Olympics athletes.
The city’s Special Olympics Committee has supported 25 athletes at various tournaments this month, with six Boccia players and four short mat bowls players in action in Bradford.
First York Boccia entered two teams, with Claire Edwards, Peter Shepherd and Mark Mason bringing home silver medals while Andrew Bayston, Stephen Ding and Jeremy Mowforth took gold. In the short mat event, Melanie Thompson won silver, while Val Lampwell, David Chadwick and Michael Millson all performed creditably in their first tournament at this level.
A further eight players will take part in a tennis tournament in Nottingham this weekend.
Tomorrow, New Earswick Indoor Bowls Club will host the Co-operative Funeralcare- sponsored Yorkshire and Humberside Special Olympics bowls singles competition.
A total of 36 players will take part, seven of whom are based at the host club in Huntington Road. Spectators are welcome to attend and play starts at 9.30am. Presentations will be at about 4pm.
