YORK City manager Gary Mills is targeting six victories from the club’s remaining six games following a “fantastic point” at home to champions-elect Crawley Town last night.

Jonathan Smith gave City a half-time lead against the Red Devils only for Sergio Torres to equalise courtesy of a lucky deflection off City skipper Chris Smith early in the second period.

It meant Crawley hung on to an unbeaten record in the league, now stretching back 24 games.

But City manager Mills cannot wait for his club’s next match now as the play-off push intensifies.

He said: “It was a fantastic point and we have six games to go to get 18 more.

“They had to resort to lumping the ball forward in the second half and I couldn’t have asked for any more off everybody, including the supporters.

“To get 3,000 fans was fantastic and I want that again for Newport at home on Saturday.

“We are three points off the play-off places which is a terrific position to be in, so bring on Newport.”

Mills also revealed that powerhouse Jonathan Smith answered his call for a goal prior to the match.

And the City chief heaped further praise on his surprise midfield partner Liam Darville too, saying: “I told Smudger before the game that it’s about time you got me a goal. He said he would and he did.

“The energy he and Liam Darville showed in midfield was fantastic.”
