YORK City defender David McGurk’s foot injury is not as bad as initially feared and he could start at Hayes and Yeading United tomorrow.

An early prognosis on Tuesday was that the pivotal centre-back might have broken a metatarsal during the second half of the 0-0 draw at Altrincham.

But scans have confirmed there is no fracture and City boss Gary Mills is hoping to have the Middlesbrough-born, 28-year-old in his first XI at Hayes.

The Minstermen chief said: “There’s no break which is good news. There’s still a problem which could be nerve related but he will have an injection in his foot and hopefully that will do the trick.

“Dan Parslow might have to go in there but if, for some reason it becomes longer term with David McGurk, we will address the situation because we’d only have two centre-backs then with Greg Young at Altrincham.”

Having made changes to his three-man midfield for the last seven games, Mills is also planning another fresh triumvirate should he field a 4-3-3 formation for the Church Road clash.

Danny Racchi and Andre Boucaud both earned recalls against Altrincham but were substituted at half-time and 68 minutes respectively.

It is expected they will now come under pressure from the likes of Jonathan Smith, Neil Barrett, Chris Carruthers, David McDermott and Will Hatfield in the battle for midfield places.

“I put two players in on Tuesday night who are more than comfortable with getting the ball and passing it but, for some reason, they seemed to want to play like Wimbledon all those years ago and get the ball forward as quickly as possible,” Mills lamented.

“I was frustrated by that because that’s not why I put them in the side.

“We’ve talked about why we didn’t play as we can and I want the players to be braver and take the ball into good areas and pass it.

“We’ve not played like we can in midfield since the Wimbledon home match and that’s why I’ve been changing to 4-4-2 because it’s not really worked.

“I’m still looking to get that right and, hopefully, the decisions I make on Saturday will be the right ones.”

Levi Mackin has been absent from City’s midfield since the 4-1 home victory over Wimbledon four games ago and will not take any part tomorrow either with Mills keen to get him fully fit for the final play-off push.

The City manager added: “Levi has had a thigh problem for a while and that’s why he hasn’t been involved.

“We’ve got to try to get it right before he’s involved again.

“It’s been a frustrating season for him and I haven’t seen the best of Levi Mackin which is disappointing for me.

“I’ve liked spells from him in training but he’s not been able to give me 100 per cent because of those niggling injuries.”

Added the City manager: “I’ve told him to get it sorted out because I need him for the last dozen games to help us try to get where we want to be.”

Mills is also calling on his side to piece together a 90-minute performance after mixed displays in their last three matches.

He said: “We haven’t played consistently for a whole match since beating Wimbledon at home.

“We had a good 45 minutes against Fleetwood and 15 or 20 minutes the other night but we’ve got to dictate for a whole game again like we can.”
