The biggest turnout for the Yorkshire Ouse Angling Championships in a decade saw 134 rods tackling the water upstream of York.

It was unfortunate that the fish did not respond as well as the anglers, and many competitors struggled in the badly stained water.

Phil Austin, of Barlby Village Stores, took the prestigious title from above the wires at Poppleton.

Fishing a chopped worm and caster feeder in mid-river, he baited with lob worm to take four bream to 4lb, plus a brace of chub in a 24lb 12oz finish.

Craig Turbitt, of Tackle 2U, took second from above the Rough Field at Redhouse, where caster and worm feeder tactics accounted for three skimmers, a chub and 3lb of roach in a net of 12lb 8oz.

Pegged next to the winner was Tony Parr, of Leeds, who took a leaf out of Austin’s book and impaled a lob worm. The switch resulted in his only bite of the day, a superb barbel of 9lb 10oz.

The pairs event went to winner Austin and colleague John Cyrowski, with a combined 25lb 14oz. That put them well ahead of Turbitt and Andy Jacques who had a combined catch of 14lb.

Others: Chris Gowling 8-13; Ray Mowat 7-12; Mick Doyle 7-5; Colin Hardy 6-0; Andy Holmes 5-14; Steve Aldridge 5-8; Tony Hewson 5-6; George Bass 5-0; Trevor Hewitt 4-8; Dave Taylor 4-7.

Section winners not included in the main prize list: D Gill 3-0; S Jeffries 3-14; T Fieldhouse 2-11; A Jacques 1-8; A Benstead 4-6; M Shaw 3-8; R Lee 2-0; K Hodgson 1-8; K Ellerby 3-13-8; S Tate 1-1; M Thorpe 4-0; A Bradley 4-2; J Nuttall 2-13.

Barnsley legend Dennis White added another title to his lengthy list of plaudits by taking the Leeds Summer League title on the Ouse on Saturday.

A third-placed finish on the day with a level 10lb of skimmers was enough to secure the league, but he could have finished in emphatic style but for two last cast slabs.

The bream on the Hunters Lodge bungalows section had been reluctant to feed, with skimmers making up most of the weights.

The big boys switched on seconds before the whistle and as the all-out sounded both Mick Shaw, of Hirst Tackle, and Mark Rockingham, of Leeds Angling Centre, were attached to a slab on adjoining pegs 219 and 220. With 6lb bream safely in the net, the scales gave the verdict to Shaw, who had added eight skimmers on feeder and worm for a 14lb 8oz finish.

Rockingham’s other fish, taken on the first cast of the day, was another big bream and together the brace scaled 10lb 2oz.

That edged out White, whose 83-point total enabled him to see off the challenges of Tackle 2U’s Trevor Hewitt, who had 81 points, and Ian Bates, of Leeds, in third on 75.

• Maggot across to the island at peg three on Kevin’s Lake proved decisive for Stuart Wilson at Langwith on Sunday.

Fishing shallow at 13 metres, he netted carp to 3lb steadily to end the day with 54lb 5oz in his net.

Second place was filled by Graham Twohey from peg 26 on Anya’s Lake, where pellet to the far bank produced 45lb 4oz.
