David McDermott back at York City

Winger David McDermott has been welcomed back to Bootham Crescent by new York City boss Gary Mills Winger David McDermott has been welcomed back to Bootham Crescent by new York City boss Gary Mills

RELEASED winger David McDermott has been given a second chance by York City’s new manager Gary Mills.

Former caretaker chief Andy Porter showed McDermott the door at Bootham Crescent last month, but the one-time Kidderminster winger has been handed another short-term contract with the Minstermen.

Mills is a long-time admirer of McDermott, having monitored him at close quarters while in charge of Kidderminster’s neighbours Tamworth.

The 22-year-old midfielder signed for City after impressing during a pre-season trial but only managed four substitute appearances before being told he had no future at the club.

His last outing came in the 5-0 mauling at Mansfield, which proved to be Martin Foyle’s last game in charge, but Mills is pleased to welcome him back into the fray.

The City boss said: “I’ve taken David McDermott back for another month.

“I know him from the Midlands and have tried to sign him a couple of times in the past, so I’m aware of his qualities.

“It just seemed daft to have somebody like that unavailable and not playing, so I had a chat with him and he’s back training with us.

“He’s never worked for me before so it’s a fresh start for him and I think the way I like my teams to play will suit him down to the ground as well.

“I said at the weekend that we need a couple of leaders and I think he’s a talker who can organise things on the field.”

Mills has also decided to extend Danny Racchi’s spell at the club with the 22-year-old midfielder having spent the last month on loan from Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Wrexham, starting five games during that time.

“I thought he did well on Saturday,” Mills added. “He was lively for us in the first half, but did not have the ball enough in the second half for him to influence everything.

“In training and during the game, though, I have been impressed with his enthusiasm and qualities.”

Remains to be seen but I thought he was looking to reduce the squad! However as an ex Kiddy player if he gets a game on Sat lets hope he does an Adam Smith!

At least he looked likely to score so I for one am glad to see him back, obviously a fall out with the previous management team...

If Columbus had turned back, no one would have blamed him.
Of course, no one would have remembered him either.
Lets see what Gary is made of...

We are crying out for width and to be honest we haven't really seen him play much - hopefully Mills can get something out of him.

He shouldn't have done what he did, that's our job, but he looked a class player and if Mills thinks he can control him that's another step forward for me!

I agree Southern Exile, Rankine as the centre forward, Till & McDermott inside right / inside left, midfield of Carruthers, Mackin & Lawless when fit, back 4 of Meredith, McGurk, Young/Parslow and Parslow/Courtney (for the moment at least).
Could be an exciting prospect (at last) once the midfielders return!

Well thats a suprise, but we have nothing to lose by giving McDermott another try. At least he looks like a footballer, unlike some of the others I do not care to mention. I would be suprised to see him starting against Kidderminster though.

Can't see Smith going anywhere until Levi is back... could well be on his way then though, at least they know they'll have to fight for the shirt now...

Also what is up with YCFC site this year, surley they should be announcing this type of stuff on their site before a local paper?!

Good decision I never saw him get a chance to have enough time on the field to have a real impact when, I saw him pre seson he had a good touch & was clever in his use of the ball. Combined with Lawless & Till we could give some defences a torrid time City fans give the lads a chance to show their worth. Still need a predator in the box though.

We do not have the worst site by a long way. Try finding the price of a ticket to watch Wrexham on theirs or any other club with that old, generic website. Sure, York's news isn't updated too often but as we've seen this last few weeks they don't share very much with us anyway.
Oh and check out Newports, find anything that isn't an advert and then tell me which website is more appealing on the eye, let alone difficult for the elderly to navigate! Website building is a subject I teach and ycfc.net certainly isn't the worst!
Oh and pleased to see McD back as he never got a proper look at, does seem like a nob though.

That's good news. McDermott looked a class act in the pre-season friendlies.

i couldn't believe it when Porter said McDermott hadn't proved himself at City and then released him, when he was never given a chance.

When you think of the rubbish we have signed this season, this was logic straight out of Alice in Wonderland.

Re trimming of the squad, I would get rid of Fyfield, Constantine, Beesley, Dowson, Smith and Racchi. I have been none too impressed with either Young or Courtney, but perhaps they are not match fit.

So far Gary Mills is making all the right noises.

McDermott is not the only player Porter fell out with,I heard he also bullied a younger player, his job was motivation but we saw very little of that from the sidelines, thank goodness the club didnt get lumbered with him,its time to move on.

long distance depressive says...
5:31pm Tue 19 Oct 10

That's very interesting and shows how little Mills thinks of some of the other squad members. Hope he gives the younger guys a decent look at now. Saturday was dismal and highlighted what a nonsence Foyle made of his last few signings. Smith, Fyfield, Courteney and Beesley will hopefully be off soon to lighten the squad and allow funds for a couple of new faces. Not sure if Young was injured as he wasn't even on the bench, but he's another who has so far failed to live up to expectations.

Imp says...

Can't see any way Fyfield is going, not when we paid a fee for him just a month or so back.
And since the likes of Smith, Courtney, Constantine are all on full-time contracts to the end of the season there's no way they'll just be shipping off either.

His comments on Facebook were embarrassing so whats to argue. He needs to grow up big style and spend less time chasing mingers in night clubs and more time acting like a professional footballer.
Sure give him a chance but also make it clear he needs to clean up his act off the field.

So according to your statement on David McDermott, is, you are allowed freedom of speech, but DM does not. It looks like a touch of "Animal Farm" to me.

Freedom of speech is allowed but professionalism and loyalty to club and colleagues is also surely to be expected. I wouldn't have taken him back -pre-season kick about performances not withstanding.
It's funny how players out of the team suddenly become world beaters. We should concentrate on supporting and building the confidence of those on the park. It's funny how the team played better when the sniping subsided last season. If the effort and commitment to the cause is there, it should be mirrored by us during the 90 minutes.

I like this move from Mills. It's bold and surprising, and (although Foyle an excellent job) it's one in the eye for the previous regime - especially if DM starts matches and performs.
Also, on the subject of players leaving, i'll drive Fyfield to the station, he's absolutely dreadful. We need Carruthers back asap. Lets hope this week they are working on confidence, as they have lacked any since Kenilworth Road back in April.

"Nominal fee", which probably means a few grand.
.
I think people need to remember that he's only a young lad, has just stepped up to full-time football, and has been thrown into a struggling managerless side, out of position. Hard to really give a good account of yourself in those circumstances.

Not at all what I was saying, YoO. I am merely a fan and can have my free say on the club. I would not, however, comment on my employers publically as it is unprofessional. If I did exercise that right I would expect some backlash and maybe even to lose my job. ALL COMMENTS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS!
