Poppleton won the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League division one championship in style after a huge 88-20 win at home to Bubwith.

John Moore and Rob Jones top-scored with 32 games, and Mike Binns and Paul Cook ran them close with 31 to secure Poppleton’s eighth top-flight title. Fulford finished runners-up, their highest league position, after beating Dunnington away and home in consecutive weeks. Sean Evans put in a superlative double shift for Fulford, scoring 58 games in the two matches with respective partners, Rich Parker and Govind Baker. In division two, Strensall produced their performance of the season with a storming comeback at home to Stamford Bridge, winning the last round 23-13 for an unlikely 55-53 win.

Justin Crowe and Alex Wilkin again scored highly as Knaresborough’s late charge continued into the final week of division three, by trouncing Boston Spa 2 80-28. But it was York 2nds who won promotion after 27 games from captain Bob Audsley and Jez Catchpole helped them to an emphatic win at Castlegarth 2.

Cawood – needing just a point at home to top team Sherburn to secure promotion from division four – were disappointed as Phil Bremner and Jonathan Sharpe ran amok for the runaway champs, to give them a comprehensive 64-44 win.

Both Cawood’s rivals for second place also fell at the last, with less likely results. Wilberfoss squandered a 39-33 lead to lose 55-53 at relegated Starbeck 2. Fulford 2 capitulated 72-36 at Dunnington 2 to avoid the drop.

Wigginton 2nds secured promotion from division five with a 61-47 win at home to Sutton-on-Derwent 2. Rowntree Park 2 took the division five crown winning the final match showdown against their rivals 66-42, thanks to 25 games from captain David Rogers and partner Pete Richardson.

Bishopthorpe just missed out, despite Sam Watson and captain James Parker matching the week’s top score of 32, in their final match at home to Sheriff Hutton.

Newcomers Harlow confirmed their division seven title with a 73-35 win at Wigginton 3.
