Fulfordgate – currently mid-table in the HPH Vale League second division – pulled off the shock of the round in the HPH Cup when they defeated first division Wheldrake.

The home side batted first scoring 149 with Michael Nelson making 44 and 16-year-old Liam Hancy 30. For Wheldrake the best bowlers were Dave Fearn 3-35 and Sam Ensor 3-39.

On a pitch of varying bounce, Wheldrake set about their task but at 37-3 all was not well. Worse was to come with the visitors all out for 130 with Hancy 3-12 and Dean Cairns 3-15 doing the damage.

North Cave skittled Askham Bryan out for 38 with John Buttle having the best figures of 7-17.

Hemingbrough had a comfortable eight-wicket win over University Staff and Burn reached the semi-finals with a 54-run victory against Copmanthorpe.

There were surprises in the Guy Mitchell Cup too.

Second division Kelfield defeated Clifton Alliance. Phil Smith (81) and Neil Atkinson (34) put on 120 for the first wicket with James Still adding 30.

Josh Bean bagged 5-62 but Alliance were never really in the hunt as wickets fell with Martyn Rhodes taking 3-14.

Heworth gained their first win of the season with a 127-run victory over North Duffield.

In the Scothern Cup, there was a tight finish in the game at Stillingfleet, where Bishopthorpe 2nds won in the last over.

Ian Thompson top-scored with 60, but it was a fine innings by 13-year-old Jacob Green (72 not out) along with Michael Dale (68) that laid the foundation for the victory with five balls to spare.

High-flying Stockton & Hopgrove overcame a gallant Hemingbrough 2nds to win by 76 runs.

Selby had a comfortable eight-wicket win over Ovington with young spinner Alex Bowden (3-4) and Jeffrey Romans (3-16) doing the damage.

In the Prendergast Trophy, Copmanthorpe 2nds had a one-run triumph over Thixendale. The home team batted first, making 142 with Steve Purdy (41) and Roy Atkinson (35) the prinicpal scorers.

Atkinson (5-30) and Steve Barnes (4-25) then put Thixendale in trouble but got the final wicket with seven balls to spare.

Askham Bryan seconds, playing at Pocklington, had a field day in the Premier Sports Cup with Mike Bains 103, the only centurion of the day.

He hit 15 boundaries and along with Paul Thornton (84) shared a second-wicket partnership of 183.

Thornton then weighed in with 5-23 in his allotted ten overs and Pock’s reply fell fell 77 short.

Wheldrake II’s Simon Rouse was 54 not out in a total of 155-4 and Mike Neilson bowled his side to a semi-final place with 5-36.

Hosts York RI suffered as Heworth squeezed into the semi-finals with a dramatic last-ball win.

RI surprisingly elected to bat and were soon to regret the decision as they were 21-4. They recovered to be all out for 121, and Heworth left it to the final delivery to win.

Vale Cup draw

THE HPH Cup Vale League semi-finals draw has pitched North Cave against Burn, and Fulfordgate against Hemingbrough. The ties are to be played on Sunday, July 4.
