York City’s play-off hunting players have been set the challenge of going unbeaten to the end of the season.

Manager Martin Foyle’s men are on a run of six games without defeat following Easter Monday’s morale-boosting last-gasp win over Altrincham and will all but secure their place in the Blue Square Premier play-offs with three points against AFC Wimbledon at Bootham Crescent tonight (7.45pm).

With the mood beginning to shift to who the Minstermen might meet in the play-off semi-finals at the end of the month, Foyle wants to keep the bandwagon rolling – and ensure City go in as one of the form teams.

“I told the players yesterday it’s not about just settling for fifth,” said the manager.

“It is looking for fourth and third. It’s about keeping this run going.

“What you want to do is keep confidence flowing.

“We have got to make sure we rest personnel at the right time towards the end, but why not go unbeaten until the end of the season? We are on another good run and we have put a few of those together.”

Foyle added: “The Altrincham win was a massive three points and it put a smile on everyone’s faces. We have got a good squad of players, everyone has worked hard to get where we are.”

It’s the last throw of the dice for the Dons, who are ten points behind York in the play-off picture, and Foyle is anticipating an open game as the visitors take a chance to gain a vital win.

He added: “They have got to come at us and that’s something we have prepared for. It will be a difficult game.”

Looking ahead to play-off possibilities should York get the job done against Wimbledon, Foyle reckons City would go into the post-season as underdogs, but says he wouldn’t mind being tagged with that at all.

“We are quietly confident in what we do,” he said.

“No one really talks about York City. In the non-league papers, in the news, York City never get a mention and it’s nice to be in that situation.

“Looking at the (possible) games, we know that we have done well against all the top sides and the better teams come and play.

“We would be the underdogs and I don’t mind the tag.”

Team-wise, Foyle said centre-back Djoumin Sangare was a “touch sore”, but still had a chance of being part of the squad against Wimbledon.
