PENALTY queens York City Ladies dethroned holders Middlesbrough to win their first North Riding County Cup since 2006.

The final – a re-run of last year’s showpiece – was a stalemate with the sides locked at 0-0 after extra time, but the Minsterwomen triumphed 5-4 on spot-kicks.

Boro, who have won the trophy seven times since 2000, took the game to York early on, but City’s Donna Corner and Abbi Webster defended well.

York’s work-rate was superb as they closed down every Middlesbrough attack in the first half.

As the second half went on, York grew in confidence and started to look the brighter team, creating good headed chances for Stacie Moyle and Lou Ross.

Middlesbrough started to find their rhythm again, but York stoically kept them at bay, with goalkeeper Sam Knight making a string of top-class saves.

In the penalty shoot-out, Nicola Duckling stepped up first for Middlesbrough and blazed her spot-kick high over the bar.

York then scored through Debra Salter, Ruth Brazier, Rachel Deighton and Kate Jackson.

With Middlesbrough replying to all four, it was left to Donna Corner to step up and score the cup-winning kick.

After the final, woman-of-the-match Knight was taken to hospital and kept in overnight with concussion after making two brave saves at the feet of Boro strikers.

City, who have only lost once since the turn of the year, are back in league action tomorrow, away to Huddersfield Town.
