Martin Foyle: York City's Blue Square play-off destiny is still in our own hands

YORK City manager Martin Foyle has reminded “doom and gloom” merchants that the club are still in control of their own destiny in this season’s play-off race.

A run of four successive defeats has seen Foyle’s side surrender a significant advantage in the battle for top-five places and drop to sixth, much to the consternation of the Bootham Crescent faithful.

But, with his team still one point behind fifth-placed Kettering and boasting a game in hand, the City chief is instructing his players to remain positive ahead of tomorrow’s trip to mid-table Altrincham.

Kettering, who lost to Cambridge on Tuesday night, travel to title-chasing Oxford this weekend.

The Minstermen, meanwhile, tackle Alty before two games in five days against Mansfield and Wimbledon, currently occupying the two positions below them in the Blue Square Premier table.

About the challenging week ahead, Foyle said: “There’s a lot of doom and gloom at the moment but the play-offs are still very much within our grasp. We have got to keep fighting and the players know that.

“There have been some individual mistakes but we’ve got to get on with it because we are all in it together. We’re expecting a difficult game at Altrincham – there are no easy ones in the Conference and people need to understand that – but we will be able to get the ball down and play on their pitch.

“We are looking forward to that and then we’ve got two crackers against Mansfield and AFC Wimbledon and I would prefer to play those teams up there with us at the moment.”

David McGurk is fit again following the knee injury that saw him miss Tuesday night’s 2-1 home defeat against Salisbury and is expected to return to the starting line-up.

Skipper Daniel Parslow and midfielder Levi Mackin have also shrugged off knocks that saw them only make the bench in that match, but Alex Lawless (hamstring) and Chris Carruthers (ankle) are still sidelined.

Foyle has also attempted to bolster his squad with moves in the loan market this week, saying: “I’ve tried to bring a couple of players in but we haven’t been able to get them here.

“There is still scope in the budget to do that though as we have worked around it well. It would be good to freshen things up because we need better at the moment.”

Having started with a 4-3-3 formation before losing Carruthers against Salisbury, Foyle also stressed that he would not rule out adopting similar tactics between now and the end of the season.

He said: “It’s the only formation we seem to come up against at the moment. You look at the top five and they are all playing it.

“None of them are playing expansive football and I don’t think you can during the final third of the season in this league, when teams are getting nervy and we’re seeing a string of funny results.”

• City’s travel partners York Pullman are offering a special rate for tomorrow’s game at Moss Rose.

For just £7.50, City fans will receive return travel, departing from Bootham Crescent at 11.30am.

To book a place, phone 01904 624447, extension 4.

Well, you'd know all about minorities living in that one horse town of Selby. And all clubs only get a small proportion of the population going to matches. Leeds get around 25,000 (less if struggling) out of the City population of 800,000.

Can't you lot see that year after year York City promise a bit then mess it up. The fans want success not excuses. They are sick of useless managers and players that don't care if they win or not. York should at least be getting crowds of 5000 plus in the league if they had a set up that actually cared. The sad FACT is the current ownership and management are not bothered about having a club to be proud of.
FOYLE OUT

Mate, if you want to support a team that wins every week you should probably try a premiership club. People support York out of loyalty, not for glory. That said, it is nice to win occasionally, and so far this season Foyle has earned his keep in that respect. So why not actually get behind the club for a change instead of whining constantly?

Martin is not turning me against him nor is he turning many others who write on the Press website against him.

As he quite correctlystates, it is still (after all the defeats over the last two weeks) in our own hands.

I ask this question, HOW MANY WRITING ON HERE EXPECTED YORK TO BE IN THE TOP SIX AT THIS STAGE OF THE SEASON WHEN IT ALL KICKED OFF. Not many if they answer honestly.

Again under Martin Foyle and Andy Porter I have been to Wembley, been to watch the lads at Stoke, and now see them in the top six.

What a F*****g failure they are as a management team.

Foyle like all employees round the world has had a target set for him this year..... I bet my bottom dollar it was top 10.....with money available pre season for a push next season for play offs. He is well on course to achieving this, so NO Foyle is not to be sacked this year. Like Stevenage we need two to three years of a stable set up so we can push for honours. I love City as do most on here, we all want success....to quote HOBC we need to look where we have come from and be pretty pround Foyle and Porter have turned us into the club we are. Which is top 6, third round of FA cup, and until this week top scorer in the league. C'mon lads get behind the boys at Alty and cheer us to a victory that will start a run of 3 wins. I O CITY

I entirely agree with HOBC.
I will openly state that last season I was calling for the head of Martin Foyle, but how anyone can seriously want him out this season after the turn around of playing staff and performances up to recent weeks.
Last season we would gladly have accepted where we are now.
Before everybody panics we are still in the play off positions as it stands, because Kettering cannot take part in them with regard to Conference rules relating to the ownership of their ground.
So lets get behind the JasonMcGill who clearly cares due to the investment made this season and the management team and players and go for the final push.
I think that certain Oxford fans may be feeling the same as us given their recent performances, every team is feeling the pressure now.

The wind-up merchants are out in force today, but still its an amusing read. City have to turn the corner sometime, and I hope it is tomorrow, but it will not be easy. Altrincham are having their best season for ages, so they will be no pushover. I was pleased and disappointed reading Martin Foyles statement 1) Pleased that he has tried to bring in some fresh faces, 2) Disappointed that he has not managed to do so. It is all about confidence, and ours at the moment is at rock bottom, a couple of quality players might just have made the difference. I will be at Altrincham, tomorrow, but with more hope than confidence.

Wind-up merchants apart, this is supposed to be a forum for debate and the fact that most contributors are able to express genuine opinions reasonably eloquently is what it is all about. However, given the spend this year, yes we should have expected a top 6 place at this point -at least. Is this a slump, blip - evidently yes. Should we the fans be happy -no! Has it led to the inevitable slump in attendance -yes - basic business - poor product poor sales! Who should get to grips with this rather than give the age-old excuses- the management from top to bottom. The owners chose to push out the Trust and say they were the investors who could do the business. Time to prove it as it isn't happening. You've spent for sure - but we're at the verge of being right back where we started and frankly that is - given the fans input, the trust money (where did my investment go in what I thought was a lifelong commitment?) - not acceptable. For ther nth time I want to know - having committed money to a trust that was to save City - how come we have been sidelined and sold short. WE may not have done better, and maybe even worse, but when I signed up to save City I did not expect to go back to a "We're the board, you're the fans" situation. A rant I know -but I just don't feel having bought into the club both financially and obviously emotionally that we are listened to. Good luck at Alty tomorrow boys -and we all wish you well and we still can do it -from the fans - cmon City!

jez b IS just a wind up merchant who has too much spare time (due to a lack of friends?) cos you only need too look at any of the other comments on any other press reports and his name usually pops up. Obviously he thinks he Knows a lot about everything, except as we all know, that does not include football.

Well said "Calders" you are obviously passionate about York City. Clearly the club were attempting to achieve something this season, and not just trying to consolidate. We were one of the few clubs to actually pay out on transfer fees, indeed £55,000 is a massive transfer fee for a club like York City. On the strength of that investment the supporters were entitled to believe that a promotion push was more than just a possibility. So obviously recent performances have been a huge disappointment, with York City losing ground in the race for promotion. Of course we are not out of the race yet, but sadly as "Calders" said there are signs that support is already starting to dwindle. Once the results start going against you, then people become more reluctant to part with their entrance money.

Dont lose faith just yet - I have it on good authority that an experienced midfield player signs on-loan tomorrow - Martin Foyle obviously hasn't given up the chase on new players so suggest that all get behind the team & the manager and lets go for it..
C'mon City!!!

Come on guys its not all doom and gloom. Every team has a rocky patch and its just unfortunate that its come at this time of the season. We are not going to win the league that was always going to be a tough call but 6 weeks ago we the form team of the BSP. I would take a point tomorrow at Alty to be fair and if we make the play offs it will be a massive bonus and massive turnaround on last seasons debacle. We have spent £65000 and for some of you it means automatic promotion but it does not work like that. The management team have done fantastically well and as soon as we hit a blip a minority of supporters call for his head. Lets get behind the players and management team and see what happens. You don't become a poor team overnight so I'm sure there will be a few twists and turns yet. We all know that the teams above us are no better on the day and we can match or beat them but confidence and morale go a long way in football so its something the lads need to turn around and I'm sure they will. Then some of you pessimistic so called York City supporters will start leaving constructive posts as opposed to coming out with C*** like sack the manager. I personally have witnessed some cracking football this season and its the best we have seen for quite some time at York.

Spot On Johnny - if the recent defeats had been spread evenly through the winning run - we would still have the same number of points, still be in the same position in the league - and no-one would be calling for the manager's head!!!!

The beauty and the depressing thing about forums like this is they reflect the way of the world. You get some who are able to understand all that goes on and make sensible observations and judgments. And then you get some who are just narrow-minded, blinkered, unable to understand anything who just spout utter rubbish (mentioning no names).

The fact is we've been undone by Chester going out of the league. We've suffered, while others profited. Had that not happened we'd still be in the playoff positions with a game in hand over some of our rivals.

Yes, we've had a blip of late - who doesn't at some point in the season? But we've been playing out of our skins up to now. Earlier in the season, we didn't know how to lose. That's down to Foyle's purchases, tactics, and some **** good players. Yes, we're perhaps too dependent on Brodie - but then again, so does a certain other team at the top of the Premier League and flying in Europe. There are certainly worse positions to be in than having the league's leading scorer in your team.

Compared with others around us, we've got a reasonable run-in ... just as long as we get out of the habit of losing to lowlier sides. The BSP is the hardest division to get out of, especially when you have a runaway leader - or two - as we generally do in this league. For most, the playoffs are the only realistic route out - and we'll be there at the end.
