HAXBY United underlined their premier division title credentials with a 5-1 win over Tate & Lyle in the York Minster Engineering Football League.

United swept to the top of the table on goal difference after bagging their fourth win from four games, and they have two games in hand on challengers Dunnington and Kartiers.

Selby side Tate & Lyle left the Ethel Ward ground empty-handed after a stunning home display.

Haxby captain Marc Thompson, the former York City midfielder, opened the scoring on 27 minutes with a swerving shot which gave the ’keeper no chance.

The visitors quickly equalised with a superb long-range effort and it was 1-1 at half-time.

Haxby dominated thereafter and added further goals through Neale Holmes, Terry Taylor and Ash Hill, who scored twice.

Dunnington suffered a 1-0 defeat at Kartiers.

Wigginton Grasshoppers returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory at struggling Dringhouses.

Lee Fisher, back with Grasshoppers after a spell at Tadcaster Albion, netted twice in a first half dominated by the visitors.

Fisher completed his hat-trick in the 55th minute and, although Dringhouses pulled a goal back with 20 minutes remaining, Wigginton took the points.

Huntington Rovers moved up to fourth in the table after a 3-0 victory over Copmanthorpe.

Copmanthorpe had the better of the first half, but were kept at bay by a superb display from Rovers goalkeeper Steve Myers. In the second half, Rovers stepped up a gear and won with goals from Gary Mitchinson, Danny Franks and Lee Jackson.

Poppleton United are level on points with Huntington after inflicting a fourth defeat of the campaign on hosts Wilberfoss.

Poppleton took the lead through Danny Temple after 20 minutes, although Wilberfoss levelled before the break. Teenager Adam Ferguson headed the winner 20 minutes from time to seal United’s third win of the season.

The division one season started with wins for Malton & Norton, Easingwold Town and York RI.

Rawcliffe Rangers and St Clement’s both hit the ground running in division two. Rangers beat Osbaldwick 5-0 and Saints were 5-1 victors over Heworth.
