SIX POINTS. That’s the challenge for Martin Foyle’s men this weekend as York City look to ensure their Blue Square Premier survival.

The Minstermen face Weymouth at the Wessex Stadium tonight (7.45pm) and relegated Lewes on Sunday knowing they need just one point to ensure their league status. But Foyle doesn’t want to settle for a solitary point.

He wants his City side to surge into the FA Trophy final against Stevenage at Wembley on May 9 on the back of four successive wins – and that means following up maximum hauls against Eastbourne and Forest Green with victories over both basement battlers.

Foyle insisted his side would “score the first goal” against Weymouth and, because Adam Smith and Christian Smith are cup-tied, his players know two places in his final squad are up for grabs if they can impress.

“We are going to go down there and score the first goal,” Foyle said. “That’s got to be our mentality. We are not going to sit back and hope for a draw.

“If we don’t let Weymouth beat us then it is over, but we are confident. The mood over the last few weeks has been very, very good. We’ve got onto the pitch at KitKat Crescent, which has been a godsend allowing us to do a lot of match-play and work on a decent surface.

“Our training facilities have been so poor; we’ve bypassed a lot of things.

“I’ve got to concentrate on Weymouth and, once we are over that hurdle, I will probably make some changes and rest one or two (for Lewes).”

He continued: “You know the team (for the final).

“Adam Smith is cup-tied. Christian Smith is cup-tied. There are two places up for grabs.

“The reserves won 2-1 and the performances were much better.

“The players are aware Adam and Christian won’t be in the side, which is a shame for them, but it gives someone else an opportunity to grasp.

“I am hoping, over the next two weeks, one or two will really shine.”

And, on the importance of winning the next two league matches, Foyle added: “It breeds confidence. You can see in those two home games the confidence has shot up ten-fold.

“If we can go unbeaten until the end of the season, then you go into the Stevenage game on a high – with four wins.”

Andy McWilliams is likely to be City’s only major doubt for the weekend’s matches.

Foyle said. “He is still feeling tight in his calf but he’s done a lot running and it is a little bit stop-start with him.

“We’re fine other than that.”
