Martin Foyle lands York City manager’s job

York Press: Martin Foyle Martin Foyle

Updated 11.40am: FORMER Port Vale boss Martin Foyle is York City’s new manager.

Foyle, 45, will replace the sacked Colin Walker after caretaker chief Neil Redfearn oversaw a 2-2 home draw with Crawley yesterday.

Foyle said today: “I’ve been offered the job and I’ve accepted it because I feel it’s a good job. The Conference is a good level and I really enjoyed my time at Wrexham.

“I feel I can work with anyone in whatever coaching role it is whether that is as a manager, first-team coach or whatever. But when York’s chairman (Jason McGill) offered me the job, I had no hesitation in accepting it.”

City chairman Jason McGill said: “We are very pleased to welcome Martin to York City. Martin has a very impressive CV and, importantly for us, has an extremely good knowledge of Conference football and what is required to succeed in this division.

"He also has the very best coaching qualifications and having been a great centre forward himself, we believe he will help our own strikers to develop and grow.

“We will be meeting with Martin today at the club and he will then commence coaching with the team tomorrow in advance of our game away to Salisbury on Saturday. We wish Martin all the best in his new role.”

Foyle managed at Vale Park for three-and-a-half years before leaving in September 2007. Having taken over from Brian Horton in February 2004, he was in charge as Vale missed out on a League One play-off place on goal difference.

The side then finished 17th the next season and two mid-table campaigns followed before Vale started the last campaign with just five points and three goals from their first seven games and Foyle left by mutual consent.

More recently, Foyle was placed in temporary charge of Wrexham after Brian Little, who took him to Wales in January, was relieved of his duties. Foyle, however, followed Little out of the door when Dean Saunders was made boss last month.

Salisbury-born Foyle’s playing career started at top-flight level with Southampton in 1981.

He went on to score 199 goals in 643 games during a career that ended at the age of 36 in 2000 and also included spells with Blackburn, Aldershot and Oxford.

The 5ft 10in forward commanded more than £500,000 in transfer fees, including a £375,000 switch from Oxford to Vale, which was a club record for the Potteries club.

He also became Vale’s post-war record goalscorer with 107 goals.

On his retirement at Vale, he went straight into coaching by taking charge of the youth team.

Not the exciting news I was hoping for, but none the less it's another new start.

Hope the fans can get behind him and see what he can do with this group of players.

There is some quality in this team, just needs the right person to get them to play with passion, and in the right formation.

Also, getting out of this dire league might give us a better chance of getting a ref who knows the rules.

Not quite the appointment I was hoping for, but it is a fresh face to the club which was required. He did a decent job at Port Vale in difficult times and should know what this league is all about from his time at Wrexham.

Foyle needs to assess this group of players quickly, the squad is too big and we lack a physical edge down the spine of the team.

Can I also predict headlines - 'Foyle's War' 'Silver lining for Foyle' and 'Foyle Wrapped After Win'

'Not quite the appointment I was hoping for' that's the understatement of the day! Has anyone looked into Mr Foyle's managerial record ? not very good reading! one wonder season with Port Vale getting to within goal difference of reaching the play-offs! doesn't really sound as impressive as reaching the play-offs! Yet again the board of directors appear to have let the fans down and shown the lack of ambition towards the club! I personally think it was a case of Mr Foyle being the cheapest option! I think when CW went on Friday, maybe a few of the board of directors should have gone with him! No ambition what so ever, looking foward to another season in this micky mouse league!

Give the guy a chance!

The Port Vale job was very difficult as they had no money whatsoever and a very demanding set of fans. Everytime they developed a decent player (from within!) they were sold straightaway to pay off debts. League One is pretty competitive and a lot better standard than we see. Three mid tables in that league was good for them in their state. He will do ok for us and his credentials are 100% better than Colin's.
Good luck Martin!

Looks like another cheap and cheerful appointment. Hardly any managerial experience and didn't set the footballing world on fire at Port Vale. Yes it was in difficult circumstances with no money to spend but we're not exactly likely to splash out a lot of cash either. Best of luck, think you may need it.

Typical harsh, negative comments from a few.

I think it's a good appointment - his coaching qualifications alone are better than what we've had in any recent times and should not be underestimated.

At this level the work done on the training pitch is what's most important because you can't be relying on bits of magic on match days.

I think to say it's a cheap, unambitious appointment is ridiculous - he'll be getting paid a fair some with those badges, in comparison to Col anyway.

Give him a chance.

Although Martin Foyle would not have been my choice either I agree with the comments "We must give him a chance". He will need time to assess the squad, then you can expect a few dead legs to be on their way. A new Manager likes to impose himself on the club by off loading the last Managers naff signings - So he has got a bit of scope there!

Good luck Martin. The support here is outstanding, particularly given the negative football we've endured this season in a poor league. There are a number of good players already here, and this club has the potential to do well a league or two higher than we are at present. We're all hoping you're the man to bring back the fans who, I'm sure, will return if you can get the club going forward in every respect

Well done to Redfearn for getting the assistant job aswell, don't get me wrong I didn't want him as manager the same as any other city fan but he has done very well with the youth team and he can hopefully now help Shep Andy Mac and Boyes become first team regulars. How can Martin Foyle not be the man for the job or be the cheap option? He has all his UEFA coaching badges and experience TWO leagues higher so he has got to be better than Col and most managers in this league, have some faith and show some SUPPORT!

Some people are never happy. I personally think that its a huge step in the right direction with both the manager and the assistant. We now have 2 men in charge with experiance, good qualifications, good contacts, a knowledge of the game in this league and above, etc. As for been a cheap option i dont think so, no disrespect to him but, Niel aspin would have been a cheap option. Unfortunately though sir Alex couldnt be tempted away from Man U, then again if we had got him some would have still moaned. Come on get behind city and give Martin and Neil a chance.

Exactly, all these people that are writing him off already is ridiculous, they can't seriously think we would have been better sticking with Col? ALL of us fans should be glad Col has gone, hope for some better entertainment (which won't be difficult for Martin to achieve) and with our SUPPORT we can still reach the playoffs, we are only 10 points behind, 3 wins and we are back up there.
Martin, the majority of us fans are fully in support of you and Neil, and I certainly believe you will turn our season around but over recent years we have mainly watched rubbish football, therefore unsuprisingly a minority section of our fans will always be sceptical (same as most clubs probably) as we have been poor for so long except the play off season. Until we eventually have some success this won't change.

Once again all the best for the Salisbury game and the future a good start to your reign to get us near the top five and Bootham Crescent will be rocking once again and ALL the fans will believe in this team once again.

Foyle hasn't had a game in chage yet. The Draw was with Redfearn in charge, who said he put Col's team out.

Foyle's first game will be Saturday 29th November - Away to Salisbury City.

And the comment about the draw being "Not Bad". Considering we were 2-0 up, and the defence didn't pick up on the rebound from the penalty, or provide much cover during the second half, I'm not sure it was that good either.

New Manager, New Start (again). Good luck Martin, Looking forward to seeing a bit more passion on the field again. Having a manager with coaching badges and experience in a higher league is a step in the right direction.

I really don’t know what planet some of you are on moaning for the sake of it.
Who out the available managers do think would want to come to manage a conference club with dwindling fan base and the wages City will be able offer.
Martin has just stepped through the gates at KKC and has been written off.
Give the man a chance for Christ sake.
You were more than likely the very same fans shouting for Walkers head ,you get your way then start moaning again when the new man is appointed.
I think we are very fortunate that some with Martins coaching qualifications would step into non league. We should all give this man respect and support not negativity.
You screamed for a change of manager for better performances but may be it is time we all changed our attitude towards the club and those who run it.
Transfer some of that Negative attitude into a positive attitude especially on match days.
Get behind the team now walker has moved on.
I for one have dragged myself up after the bore of walker’s defensive era and look forwarding to entertaining football once again.

You screamed for a change of manager for better performances but may be it is time we all changed our attitude towards the club and those who run it. Transfer some of that Negative attitude into a positive attitude especially on match days. Get behind the team now walker has moved on. I for one have dragged myself up after the bore of walker’s defensive era and look forwarding to entertaining football once again. cityfan08

We now have a coaching team who are very technically capable and know the game well. The only question is over tactics and man-management, and the fact Foyle managed anything with a Port Vale team heading into disaster suggests he may have some ability to motivate.

He won't be the cheap option, and he won't be a short-term choice. I'd love some of the snipers to tell us who they think should have been in charge?

Why is it that all people can do is moan? Who cares eho he is, be proud to be from York. That's what being a fan is all about, or at least it should be. You post messages on here giving opinions on things that you yourselves have little knowledge about, yet ultimately, your opinions mean nothing.

I don't know who he is, and I don't care. As long as he does his best, then I'll be happy.

Quite happy about the appointment. Most footy fans will know of Martin's exploits as a striker in the Football League. Let's hope he helps City achieve their goal of a return to the FL - it's long overdue! Welcome and good luck, Martin!

Congratulations on your appointment Martin.

Welcome to YCFC, the home of the best football supporters. (you will understand this claim if you read some of the above comments)

Please do us a favour, get us out of this Mickey Mouse league, it really shouldn't be hard given your coaching qualifications and the fact you will be competing against a large number of part time clubs. You might have noticed that the current league leaders are a village team full of bruisers and hoofers

Also, just one more favour ...in your post-match interviews please refrain from using the following terms:

1. “We worked our socks off” (unfortunately the club has used all of their budget for the next six seasons in respect of replacement hosiery for players, in fact if we "work any more socks off" it is Jason’s intention to include a sponsor a players socks section within the match day program with the lucky sponsors being presented with autographed pairs at a end of season ceremony.

2. I'm chuffed (someone may well mistake this as a request for you to be placed on the railway line which runs near to the ground and shunted off to Scarborough) or alternatively placed in Leeming Road along with the other chuffers.

3. “We matched them” (otherwise we will call you twisted fire starter)

and finally

4. “I will be pleased if we finish above them in the league” (the previous incumbent of your position would have been quite happy to finish third from bottom of the league above Wrexham and Torquay)

If you can do these small favours for me I will be eternally grateful and the vast majority of our supporters will stay off your back (at least while the team is winning)

I think its fair to say that most of us would not of known who MF was before 2 days ago. But we have to remember where we are at the moment before we start treating his appointment with derision.

He had a decent enough pedigree as a player and hasn't done that bad a job as a manager so far.

My main concern is that I think he looks a little bit like Terry Dolan.

Good luck MF!

Good choice. I have no problem with Neil Redfearn and never have. What happened when he was at Scarboro is in the PAST.

Good luck Martin and Neil

If you guys can motivate the players and be tactically aware, then we have already improved on the previous duo.

I'm sure that the new management team will be adventurous and want to go for win's in games, that's all that the majority of fans are asking.

Those who were on Neil Redfern's back previously get off it and give the guy a chance. Could never see any problem myself, we have had plenty of ex Scarborough players in the past.
