A TEAM from a York sports club are off to compete in Europe.
Members of City of York Athletic Club competed at the Liverpool Cross Challenge, a trial race to make Great Britain and Northern Ireland's team at next months European Cross Country Championships on Saturday (November 25), in Sefton Park, giving runners the opportunity to book their plane ticket to Brussels.
Running for York, Angus McMillan braved the cold and stormed to fifth place in the senior category, and seventh overall. Whilst automatic qualification for the national team is only given to the top four runners, Angus holds out hope for one of the two remaining discretionary places becoming available.
Alongside Angus was the club's Finian Hutchinson, who recently re-joined the club, Finian finished in 107th, narrowly ahead of James Tucker who managed a commendable 116th.
Another new recruit for the club Maddie Mastrolonardo came 99th in the senior women’s race.
In the junior men’s race Gianluca Mastrolonardo was the clubs highest placed out of three runners as he came 43rd with Charlie Wright and Ed Brown coming 98th and 116th respectively. In the under 17 women’s race Lottie Langan came 26th.
Race distances on the day ranged from 1.7km to 9.8km, with over 3,000 runners traversing the muddied fields.
On Sunday, December 10, those who qualified for the European championships will have the opportunity to compete against the continents best. Team GB will be hoping to extend their lead atop the all-time medal table for the competition.
