LEEPER Hare premier division outfit Old Malton St Mary's lifted the York FA Saturday Senior Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Poppleton United.

Poppleton, who have just been promoted from division one, provided a stern test for the top flight side in the final at Tockwith.

Old Malton stormed into the lead after three minutes when a ball was headed on for prolific striker Dave Bell to outpace the Poppleton defence before shooting into the net.

Poppleton's Carl Shepherd then forced Old Malton 'keeper Rob Thackray into a low save near a post.

Poppleton piled on the pressure, but Old Malton were dangerous on the break and star midfielder Sarja Cham went close.

On the half hour, the Ryedale side increased their lead with a close-range shot by Ryan Cooper.

Thackray then produced a one-handed save to deny Poppleton's Paul Ryan, while at the other end Poppleton 'keeper Dave Bailey brought off an outstanding save to deny Bell when he was clean through on goal.

After the interval, Poppleton caused more problems and Old Malton centre-back Dean Readman had to be at the top of his game.

Poppleton's Steve Sacks produced two great shots which brought Thackray into action yet again, and Shepherd missed a chance to reduce the arrears with a header when he only had the 'keeper to beat.

Midway through the second half Poppleton did cut the deficit when a through ball fell to Ryan, who coolly slotted home.

Poppleton continued to attack but Old Malton held firm.

However, they had a lucky escape with three minutes remaining when a Craig Theaker shot cracked against the Old Malton bar with Thackray well beaten.

The Faber Trophy was presented to Old Malton by Roy Ellwood, president of the York FA.

Meanwhile, the York FA Sunday Afternoon Cup final was won by York St John after a thrilling 6-4 triumph over Clifton.
