AN EMPHATIC GMB Barla National Cup triumph has set Heworth Amateur Rugby League Club up with a daunting challenge.

The reward for the Black and Whites battering Cumberland hosts Salterbeck Storm 42-4 in the preliminary round was a home first round tie against National Conference premier division outfit Hull Dockers this Saturday.

It's the sort of tie to get Heworth pulses racing as they will bid to down a team, who are two divisions above. Declared club spokesman Ken Sykes: "It will certainly be a test for us next week."

Heworth tore into a rapid 12-0 lead at Salterbeck. Stand-off Chris Varley began the rout when he bamboozled the home defence to score under the posts. Ben Potter converted.

Soon after, a flick pass from skipper Sam Clarke released Adam Jobling who sent winger Mike Welsh scurrying over. Again Potter goaled.

But Salterbeck countered with a try from Robert Scott. However, in the last five minutes of the first half Heworth centre John Coulson powered over for two tries, only one of which was kicked by Potter for a half-time 22-4 advantage.

The second half was graced by a hat-trick of tries from man-of-the-match Jon Jewitt, who showed ace footwork. Mark Watkinson also crossed with two Potter goals completing the win in which Coulson and Varley also excelled.
