WIGGINTON Grasshoppers, the table-toppers in the York Minster Engineering League premier division, left it late to squeeze through the second round of the York FA Saturday Senior Cup.

Wiggy needed a Gary Newton strike as the clock ran down to edge out a young Osbaldwick side 3-2.

Luke Addison had bagged Wigginton’s first goal with man-of-the-match Newton scoring the second from the spot following an earlier penalty miss.

Oliver Green had been both goals for mid-table Osso, for whom Dan Davidson was the star man.

Cup holders Dunnington cruised through with a 5-1 win over York RI, who needed a man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Paul Bailey to keep the score down. RI had knocked out last season's finalists, Sporting Knavesmire, in the previous round but their run came to an abrupt end.

The 2016 winners, Old Malton St Mary's, likewise put on a five-star show, beating Tockwith 5-0.

Man-of-the-match Damon Cox scored twice with strikers Marcus Godsell and Steve Baxter and an own goal also finding the target.

Four-goal hero Niall Smallwood struck twice in each half to give Rawcliffe a well-earned 4-1 home win against Easingwold Town.

Dringhouses defended resolutely, their back line being well marshalled by keeper Jamie Backhouse, but they lost out to Pocklington Town 2nds, who edged the tie 1-0 thanks to a 70th-minute Tom Reay strike following a cross from the right by Chris Tatterton.

Malton & Norton threw everything at F1 Racing but their tie ended goalless.

M&N eventually came out on top 5-4 after a penalty shoot-out.

Two goals for Lee Bunce and one from George Brown gave Huntington Rovers a comfortable 3- home win against Wilberfoss.

In a south York derby, Hemingbrough edged Riccall United 2-1.

Barmby Moor and Rufforth United were both in seven heaven in the York FA Saturday Junior Cup.

Barmby won 7-2 at Swinton while Rufforth ran out 7-1 winners at home to Elmpark with two goals from Dave McNicall, one each from Liam Keenaghan, Sean Stockdale and a Danny Cates hat-trick.

There were hat-tricks for Calum Marshall and Adam Galloway as Heworth Reserves hit Poppleton United Reserves for six, winning 6-1.

Heworth's first team also managed six as they won away at Haxby United Reserves thanks to two goals each from Dan Marshall and John Moore and one apiece for Daz Gargan and Carl Hannigan.

Haxby's first team beat Bishopthorpe United 6-3 while, conversely, Bishopthorpe United Reserves were six-hitters at home to Huntington FC.

Other clubs to progress were Pollington, Malt Shovel, Pocklington Town 3rds, Civil Service, Tockwith Reserves, Dunnington Reserves, Hemingbrough Reserves and Cawood, who beat Old Malton Reserves 8-7 in a lengthy penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.
