CITY of York AC's Nathan Smith helped England to victory in the British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships at Peebles, Scotland.

Smith finished fourth in the under-20 men's race, just eight seconds off a silver medal, but his display ensured England took team honours.

Scotland's Freddie Carcass was a dominant individual winner, completing the 8km course, featuring 433 metres of ascent, in 33 minutes 59 secondss.

Behind him were England's trio of Joe Dugdale (34-59), Rory Domville (35-01) and Smith (35-07), which earned them team gold.

Smith's City of York clubmate Tyler Hutchinson finished seventh, and fifth Englishman home, in 36-19.

A third York runner, Tyler's brother Finnian Hutchinson, came 15th in the U17 boys' race, recording 28-13 for the 5.8k/321m course.

Meanwhile, City of York's women finished 16th in the North of England Road Relay Championships at Sportcity, Manchester.

Charlotte Mason (22-03) ran the team's fastest time on leg one, with Helen Wilkinson (24-09), Karen Wood (25-16) and Katy Wood (22-45) completing the line-up.

Mason followed up her effort the next day by finishing as second lady in the Tadcaster 10-mile race in a time of 63-23.

York's U17 boys came 11th in their race at Sportcity where Josh Dickinson clocked the leading time of 10-58 on the opening 3.5k leg.
