HOLGATE WMC maintained the only 100 per cent record in the York Amateur Bowling Association League first division after a tough game against Bootham.

WMC's Steve Lea and Gary Lewington had impressive wins, while Alan Smith's rink, having trailed for most of their game, snatched victory on the last two ends against Vic Thompson.

Mick Head salvaged a point for Bootham, making the final score 7-1.

Selby kept up the pressure with an impressive 7-1 victory at Rowntree, while the result of the night on match-day five, an 8-0 whitewash of Shipton, lifted RI Amateurs to third.

RI Corinthians beat Dunnington 6-2, while Haxby Road won 6-2 at Clifton's new Poppleton home.

Stamford Bridge are top of division two despite a 2.5-5.5 defeat to Osbaldwick.

Copmanthorpe, now second, could only draw 4-4 with Minster but have a game in hand on Bridge.

Hull Road Park beat Poppleton Road WMC 7-1, while West Park got their first win of term with an impressive 7.5-0.5 victory over Retreat. Poppleton beat Scarcroft 6-2.

Match-day four in the league had been a washout.

The top-of-the-table clash in the York C&IU Evening League between champions Holgate and leaders Clarence resulted in a draw.

Although Holgate were a player short, they won the aggregate by 2.75 points, narrowly losing one of the three rinks by just a quarter of a point.

St Clement's, with several of their players on holiday, conceded their game against Railway Institute to give RI maximum points which lifted them to second.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire made a poor start to their 2017 campaign, losing 20-2 to Lancashire in the Muras Cup on a wet day in Manchester.

The White Rose, missing a host of senior players, began solidly enough, but Lancashire's strength gradually started to tell and, in challenging conditions, the Red Rose built leads in all six rinks by the halfway stage.

By 15 ends, the story was slightly brighter for Yorkshire with the rink skipped by Paul Humphreys (York RI Amateurs) having established a lead and Chris Kelly (Nafferton) and Gary Lewington (Holgate WMC) both within two of their opponents.

But, as the rain returned, Humphreys squandered an ideal chance to win the game with his last bowl and Lewington’s four suffered more misfortune that left both sides having to accept defeat. Kelly at least stole a three on the final end to beat Robert Stirling’s Lancashire rink by a point.

Next week, Yorkshire's remaining Muras Cup matches take place at Silksworth in Durham with fixtures against the hosts and Northumberland to come before the White Rose begin their Middleton Cup campaign away to Derbyshire on June 3.

In the York Zone Two Wood Singles, John Phillips (Selby) and Brian Chapman (RI Amateurs) reached county quarter-finals with impressive defeats of Humphreys and David Dearlove (RI Amateurs) respectively.
