YORK RUFC produced an impressive display to beat Doncaster Knights in the final of the Hull Ionian Colts 7’s tournament.
Last year's Plate winners had been drawn in a tough qualifying group but secured victories over Hull Ionians (24-0), Wharfedale (26-10), Market Rasen (31-7), and Chester (21-5).
After winning the group, York progressed to a semi-final clash with Sheffield where they suffered the setback of a first half yellow card and trailed 17-0 at the interval.
However, after a sharp team talk, York turned the game around and won 19-17.
The tournament involved 21 teams from across the North of England and has been growing in stature.
Final opponents Doncaster Knights had reportedly been training for the event for over a month but York delivered, arguably, the best performance of the tournament and snuffed out their game plan, scoring four times to win 28-5.
York's coaching staff were delighted to have won six games out of six with a 149-44 points difference and felt it was a marker of the team's fitness and commitment.
The team now shifts its focus to the National Cup Final against Guildford on May 1.
