YORK Indoor Bowls Club made up for their disappointing Yorkshire League campaign as they won the county Seniors Double Rinks trophy.

As opposed to previous years where eight teams participated on the last day, this time the competition was played to the last four, who then faced each other in a round-robin format at New Earswick IBC.

York won all three of their games to take the trophy.

They firstly beat North Cave, who had finished as runners-up in division one, 36-24 on aggregate.

Alan Vowles, Tony Hopcutt, Craig Newton and Dave Stroughair were level at 6-6 before picking up a six which gave them a cushion as they went on to win 16-12.

Malcolm Lewars, Phil Parsons, Graham Brooke and Paul Mooring were 10-7 ahead and, although they dropped a five, they won the remaining four ends to finish 20-12.

Favourites Featherstone, in their last tournament before their club folds, were surprisingly beaten 29-24 by Harrogate, who came from behind to win both rinks.

York's second game was against Harrogate, and they made one change, bringing Graham Instone in for Tony Hopcutt.

Mooring's side led 7-0 after five ends, although by the 14th Harrogate were 12-10 up. A four and two singles gave York a 16-12 victory.

Stroughair's team also let a lead slip as they went from 12-9 ahead to 13-12 behind with two to play. However, they won both and took their game 15-13, giving York a 31-25 aggregate win and maintaining their maximum points record.

Featherstone, meanwhile, got back in contention by beating North Cave 38-12.

York needed only one point from six in their last game against Featherstone to secure the title.

Stroughair's rink, with Hopcutt back in for Instone, fell 7-2 behind but scored a four then a five to take a lead they did not relinquish, going on to win 23-14.

Mooring's team also looked on course for a 100 per cent record as they led 16-10 but they lost their last four ends and the game 22-16.

However, York won 39-36 and the four-point haul was more than enough.

Harrogate beat North Cave in the final match to finish second.

The cup and mementoes were presented to York captain Phil Parsons and his team by Yorkshire Seniors and New Earswick president Gordon Fratson.

Tomorrow, York play their national Mason Trophy quarter-final against Barwell at Bassetlaw IBC in Worksop, starting at noon.

On Saturday at noon, York play North Cave in the North Eastern League.

Meanwhile, New Earswick Ladies beat Thornaby 91-58 in the Yorkshire League, picking up eight of the 10 points.

At home, Lynn Page, Moira Ellis, Moyra Headley and Majorie Watson went from 4-4 after six ends to 25-6 after 17 and on to a 27-11 victory.

Sally Domville, Peggy Walker, Irene Warrington and Norma Davies were tied at 9-9 after 11 ends but opened a 19-11 lead after 16. Thornaby fought back to within one shot with two to play but two singles gave Earswick a 21-18 win.

At Thornaby, Margaret Moss, Annette Prosser, Carol Williams and Pat Walker restricted their hosts to only five singles in the first 19 ends as they strolled to a 23-8 win.

The game of the day saw Doramy Bellwood, Margaret Pearson, Margaret Morgan and Kath Sykes drop a five on the first end but get them back at the second.

The rinks continued to match each other to 11-11 after 11 before Earswick won the next three to lead 16-11. However, they lost the next four to go 21-16 behind and, although they won the last three, they lost 21-20.
