YORK Indoor Bowls Club came through their Egham Trophy tie against Hartlepool with flying colours as they won three of four rinks and took the game 61-53.

At home, Alan Vowles, Maureen Walker, Phil Parsons and Helen Walker led 7-0 after five ends, but were pegged back to 10-10 by the 12th.

They eked out a narrow 13-12 advantage with two to play before scoring a single then a vital four to win 18-12.

Joan Jackson, Neal Macdonald, Carol Instone and Dave Stroughair also had a slender 13-12 advantage with two to play having come from 9-6 behind and they finished with two singles to take their game 15-12.

In Hartlepool, Hayley Robinson, Sue Allen, Graham Brooke and Craig Newton were on top form as they took the lead on the second end with a three and kept it throughout for a 19-13 victory.

Nigel Macdonald, Melanie Brooke, Linda Harrison and Paul Mooring had a tough afternoon, trailing 16-5 with the other three rinks having completed their games.

At this point York had only an four-shot advantage on aggregate, but they stemmed the tide and won the next three ends to finish losing 16-9.

York now play South Shields in the last 16 next Sunday, starting at 10am.

York overcame Scarborough 39-29 in the EIBA Over-60s Double Rinks and will next play Hornsea, who beat New Earswick.

At home, Graham Instone, Tony Hopcutt, Malcolm Lewars and Mal Bulmer led 12-7 after 11 ends but with three to play they were 14-12 behind. They won all three to take the home leg 17-14.

In Scarborough, Alan Vowles, Barry Walker, Phil Parsons and Graham Brooke led 8-4 after five ends and 14-6 after ten before being pegged back to 19-15 with three to play. The game finished an end early after Brooke's men sealed an excellent away win with a two then a single to finish 22-15.

Despite only winning two rinks out of the six played, Yorkshire beat Lincolnshire 98-87 in the EIBA Over-60s Liberty Trophy and will now play Nottinghamshire in the quarter-finals on January 24.

* YORK Indoor Bowls Club hosted the annual Association of Independent Clubs (formerly the Railway Federation) indoor bowls tournament which involved teams from Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Northumberland.

It was Charlie Arnett's York-based team who took the trophy for the third year running, as he Mal Bulmer, Roger Ford and Phil Parsons overcame Noel Mallen, Ged Mackie, Ken Simpson and Tony Hopcutt 11-4 in the final.
