WIGGINTON Grasshoppers moved to within four points of York Minster Engineering League premier division leaders Huntington Rovers thanks to a 4-3 victory over Dunnington at Mill Lane.

The home side took an early lead when Matthew Tiplady was put clear in the first minute and fired his shot through the goalkeeper’s legs.

Ten minutes later and it was 2-0 – Eddy Clapham doubling the Hoppers’ advantage when Steve Jarvis’ header rebounded off the post and into his path.

Dunnington fired back quickly, however, and were soon back in the game at 2-1 only to see Tiplady round a defender and rifle the ball home to restore Wiggy’s two goal lead.

Dunnington continued to attack and Josh Hutchinson hit a ferocious shot which Hoppers keeper Michael Clancy did well to push away.

However, the ball fell back into Hutchinson’s path and the winger made no mistake second time around.

The second period saw Wigginton come out strongly and they were rewarded midway through the half when Clapham slid the ball across to Neale Holmes who netted from close range to make it 4-2.

Following that goal, the balance in play shifted and the hosts had to withstand a torrent of pressure from Dunnington.

Martyn Day made it 4-3 with seven minutes remaining and, with Hoppers on the back foot, Dunnington pressed on and created several more chances but the home side held firm to claim the points.

Sporting Knavesmire brought Church Fenton White Horse’s unbeaten league record to an end in some style, recording a 4-0 win over the visitors.

Danny Owers and Alex Dale gave the home side a 2-0 halftime lead before Andrew Simpson and Jake Duckworth rounded off a comprehensive victory in the second period.

Both Knavesmire and Church Fenton now sit level on 20 points – that’s along with Old Malton St Mary’s who recorded their fifth draw of the season away at Osbaldwick.

Danny Penrose gave Osbaldwick an early lead only to see the champions fire in two goals in quick succession to take a half-time lead.

A Sam Shipley penalty in the latter stages of the game restored parity though and ensured that the points were shared.

Malton and Norton sit sixth in the table after an 8-0 mauling of Riccall United.

Simon Reeves (4), Scott Preston (3) and Matty Reeves inflicted the damage.

York RI saw red at home to F1 Racing – finishing the game with only eight players after three dismissals.

Alex Martin bagged a brace for the hosts with Dan Hickey, Jonah Tomlin-Kent and Adam Tiffany also netting in a 5-0 success.

Danny Leach (2), Daniel Pedras (2), Lee Bannister, Matty Bastock and John Patrick found the target for Copmanthorpe as they gained an easy 7-0 triumph at home to Brooklyn.

Dringhouses defeated Tadcaster Magnets 8-2.
