YORK Indoor Bowls Club Ladies, beaten finalists last season, had a good first round win in this year's Yetton Trophy, defeating Scarborough 96-46.

The margin was comfortable by the finish but York had trailed 21-20 on aggregate after five ends.

Carol Instone, Helen Wood, Carol Banks and Joan Jackson dominated their match and after a seven at the third end, picked up scores on a regular basis to end up victorious 37-5.

In the other home match, Helen Walker, Sheila Turpin, Lynda Parker and Zoe Eagles had a close game but fell 17-14, unable to overcome a seven-shot deficit after five ends.

They got on level terms after 15 ends but dropped a three.

In the away fixtures, Sue Allen, Hayley Robinson, Betty Richardson and Maureen Walker fought back after losing a six on the tenth end to claim a 17-16 victory.

Linda Harrison, Melanie Brooke, Sue Tomlinson and Dot Kennelly had an easier time, picking up five and six shots at single ends en route to a 28-8 victory.

In the Denny Cup, York's men had a comfortable win against Leeds, victorious in all four rinks.

Leading the way, Mark Clarke, Graham Instone, Eric Hodgson and Alan Vowles picked up shots of a regular basis before a five ensured victory by 26-6.

It was a similar story for Paul Mooring, Tex Stevens, Jim Robertson and Neal MacDonald, who ran out 23-10 victors.

In the away fixtures, Craig Newton, Graham Brooke, Barry Walker and Andy Humphreys eased to victory with two fives in a 22-8 win.

Dave Stroughair, Tex Stevens, John Crowe and Nigel MacDonald withstood a fightback before easing to victory with a four on the penultimate end to win 21-17.

York will meet Scarborough in round two a week on Saturday.

Neighbours New Earswick will not join them after an agonising 65-63 defeat to Hornsea.

It was back to club bowls for the Huntington Road outfit after hosting the televised Test matches between England and Scotland. The woman's match had been won by England but Scotland gained revenge in last week's sell-out men's event.

At home in the Denny Cup, New Earswick's Dave Imeson, Dave Elcock, Mick Head and Paul Dawson won the first eight ends to lead 13-0.

The visitors got off the mark with a four at the ninth end but the rest of the ends were shared evenly and Earswick won 21-10.

Dave Sykes, Gary Jones, Andrew Fothergill and Kevin Liddell led a tight, low-scoring match 8-6 after 12 ends but Honsea broke the run of singles with two threes at the next two ends. Earswick only picked up one single in the last six ends of the 18, Hornsea winning 16-9.

Away, Bob Elliot, Brian Birch, Rod Walker and Brian Gray dropped a six at the first end and always struggled to catch up, winning only two of the next seven to trail 13-4.

They won the next three ends to pull the score back to 13-9 only to drop nine shots at the next three to go 22-9 behind. The Earswick four had the better of the last four ends but lost 24-16.

John Harrison, Gordon Fratson, Rod Walker and Colin Pickup were emboiled in a very tight game with no more than two shots between the teams until Hornsea picked up a three to lead 14-10 after 14 ends.

Earswick then scored two twos to level with two ends to play. Hornsea scored a single to retake the lead but Earswick picked up a three at the last to win 17-15.

Tomorrow, York Knights take on Leeds in York Over-55s League division two.

On Saturday, York Ladies take on North Cave, while York's men meet Hornsea in Yorkshire League division one and Selby in division two.

All games start at noon.
