NEW EARSWICK took the honours in the first division derby against York in the Yorkshire Indoor Bowls League.

At Huntington Road, Bob Elliot, Rod Walker, Barry Johnson and Brian Gray matched Alan Vowles, Chris Bishop, Graham Instone and Mick Clarke shot for shot and the score was 10-10 after thirteen ends. York edged slightly ahead and, with two ends to play, led 16-14 before picking up a four and a two to win 22 -14.

In the other game, Graham Lockwood, Colin Ellis, Colin Pickup and Bill Waldie matched their opponents Ray Calpin, Wally Derbyshire, Tex Stevens and Graham Brooke. With the score 10-8 to York after eleven ends both sides then picked up a four to take the score to 12-15 to York after fourteen ends.

The scoring then exploded with the New Earswick rink scoring sixteen shots without reply at the next five ends to lead 28-15 with two ends to play. York then picked up a six and a three but New Earswick won 28-24.

Over at Thanet Road, Dave Imeson, Dave Elcock, Mick Head and Paul Dawson were never behind in the whole game against Dudley Williams, T.Wilford, Malcolm Harrison and Phil Parsons. However, with the overall scores close, they dropped a five at the last end to cut their final winning score to 20-17.

In the final match, Dave Clayden, Dave Kermode, Andrew Fothergill and Kevin Liddell were trailing A.Smith, John Crowe, Nigel McDonald and David Stroughair 14-6 after twelve ends.

New Earswick picked up eleven shots at the next three ends - including a six at the fifteenth - to take a 17-14 lead. They still led 19-18 with one end to play and picked up a four at the last to win 23-18.

In the Over 55s Division One, the New Earswick Falcons took on Doncaster.

At home Eric Cookson, Gordon Fratson, Colin Ellis and Ralph Tiplady got off to flier and led A.Clarke 14-4 after nine ends.

But, in a game of two halves, Doncaster pulled it back to 18-18 after eighteen ends and went on to win 21-23.

In the other home game, Graham Lockwood, Pat Inwood, Alwyn Anderson and Barry Johnson also got off to a good start and led M.Harper 6-0 after three ends but, after that, were never at the races and dropped five threes and two fours on the way to a 13-31 defeat.

At Doncaster, Bob Elliot, Dave Elcock, Rod Walker and Tony Abbot had an even start against A.Costello and were trailing just 7-8 after nine ends. But Doncaster finished the stronger to secure a 20-16 victory.

Dave Imeson, Dave Kermode Mick Head and Bill Waldie were in command of their match against P.Smith from the start and led 13-4 after nine ends. Despite dropping two fours, they went onto a comfortable 25-16 victory.

In the Over 55s Division 2, New Earswick Ospreys took on Scarborough.

At home, both rinks got the season off to a winning start. Bill Nuckey, Barry Shipley, Ray Mawson, and Kevin Potter led J.Costello 21-1 after after twelve ends.

Scarborough fought back in the second half of the game but still went down 27-11.

Bruce Dobson, Dave Thompson, Brian Birch and Terry Bellwood won the first end against T. Robinson’s Scarborough rink. The scores were level at 14-14 after eighteen ends but Ospreys went on to win 19-15.

At Scarborough, Jim Robinson, Dave Coulter, Doug Carr and Alan Price found themselves 3-14 down after nine ends against C.Turnbull’s rink. They then had the better of the second half but could not catch the Seasiders and went down 13-20.

In the final match, Darrell Howard, Dave Toms, Dave Moorhouse and Bob Barrett had the closest match of the day against J.Pinero. The scores were level at 8-8 after eleven ends, and 16-16 after nineteen ends, but Scarborough scored two at the twentieth end to take the lead for the first time before going onto win 18-17.

On Saturday, the two teams meet in the North Eastern Ladies League.
