YORK City failed to score for a fifth successive game during a 1-0 home defeat to Aldershot.

Bernard Mensah’s first-half goal proved sufficient to give a Shots team, who only mustered two shots on target themselves, maximum points.

The result left City without a goal in seven-and-a-half hours since Aidan Connolly’s 90th-minute finish against Solihull last month.

Home keeper Kyle Letheren was called into his only save of the afternoon on six minutes when he parried away Jake Gallagher’s 15-yard attempt after Iffy Allen had left City right-back Shaun Rooney for dead.

At the other end, the hosts were denied a one-on-one opportunity when Danny Galbraith charged clear but Connolly, who didn’t touch the ball, was flagged offside.

The Shots then missed a glorious chance to open the scoring when Shamir Fenelon somehow cleared the crossbar and the David Longhurst Stand from four yards out after a low Mensah cross from the left.

Gary Waddock’s men did not waste their next opening, however, with Nick Arnold and Matt McClure combining to send Mensah sprinting through the left channel through a wide gap in the City defence.

He went on to blast emphatically past an exposed and advancing Letheren.

The Minstermen responded with a couple of hopeful, right-wing attempts by Kaine Felix and Rooney that were saved at his near post by Shots keeper Jake Cole.

Jack Higgins also steered high and wide from a corner by Connolly, who was stretchered off on the stroke of half-time following Will Evans’ hard, but fair, challenge.

Left-back Alex Whittle also didn’t reappear after the interval having picked up a first-half problem.

Aldershot left-back Nick Arnold went on to sidefoot wide from the edge of the box after exchanging passes with Allen and, at the other end, Galbraith cleared the bar with an ambitious 30-yard effort.

Fenwick, meanwhile, was flagged offside having netted after Matty Dixon’s 20-yard strike was pushed out by Cole and Daniel Nti’s long-range effort deflected wide off team-mate Galbraith, who also had a curling attempt pushed behind by Cole.

The away keeper also went on to do well, saving an edge-of-the-box Richard Brodie effort on 77 minutes before Simon Heslop went close from 12 yards.

Amid calls of “Jackie Out,” Nti then miserably wasted the final opportunity of an equaliser on 89 minutes when, after breaking clear through the right channel, he allowed Evans to recover and block his simple square ball to Brodie.
