YORK City boss Jackie McNamara accused his team of “switching off” following a 2-1 defeat at Wrexham.

The Minstermen trailed to John Rooney’s early penalty, awarded against Matt Fry, but got back into the game when Richard Brodie scored for a fourth consecutive match.

Gary Mills’ team secured maximum points in the second half, though, when skipper Sean Newton headed in unmarked from a Rooney corner.

City chief McNamara was unimpressed by his team’s efforts to stop Newton, suggesting that Clovis Kamdjo, on as a substitute for the injured Yan Klukoswki, lost his man at the flag kick.

“It was a bit of a blow when Yan went off because we were well on top and it was the man who he would have been marking that scored for the goal as well,” McNamara pointed out. “We started the game slowly and were on the back foot, although I thought the penalty against us was very, very soft and the referee bought what their lad did.

“We then scored a fantastic goal and had a few opportunities to get a second or third, but didn’t. I thought Jake Wright was also pulled back when he had a clear scoring opportunity, but their lad went on to tackle him and we got a corner instead.

“We didn’t get a lot of decisions but, in the second half, we were sloppy with our passing and switched off at the corner when their player got a free header and that changed the game. It lifted the crowd, everyone wanted the ball for them then and we didn’t ask enough questions after that.

“A few looked tired when we were chasing the game in the second half, but both teams had played on Saturday so that shouldn’t have made a difference.”

McNamara also introduced Callum Rzonca for his third senior outing as a substitute and first in almost a year, along with Scott Fenwick in the second half.

On their performances, the Bootham Crescent boss added: “When Jake Wright came off with a sore foot, I was looking for a spark from somebody to change things.

“Callum worked hard. There are little things he can improve on, but he’s been looking really good and sharp in training, so we decided to give him a shot.

“We then made another substitution and changed to 4-4-2 but, if Brodes is not out there at the moment, I don’t think we compete enough with the centre halves up there and that’s a bit of a worry.”

Klukowski is now unlikely to feature in Saturday’s home match with Solihull Moors and could be out for several weeks depending on the extent of his first-half injury.

“Yan has pulled or torn a muscle in his thigh, so we will have to wait and see which one he has done,” McNamara explained.
