DEJA VU saw youngsters at Pike Hills GC claim York Union of Golf Clubs’ Junior Champion Club glory.

Not only did the Tadcaster Road outfit win the competition for the second year in a row - thanks to the efforts of Alfie Atkinson, Will Swiles, skipper Matthew Jagger and George Atkinson - but Pike Hills 21-handicapper Tom Whittaker, who represented the club on a singles basis, also defended his individual title.

On a day which saw heavy rain, Whittaker posted a stableford score of 42 points, matched by George Atkinson, but the former took the prize once again because he was not included in the four-man team. In an impressive display, Jagger notched 38 points along with Alfie Atkinson, and Swires scored 28.

With the best three cards counting, they accumulated an aggregate score of 118 stableford points. Runners-up were The Oaks, assisted by fine contributions from Jake Sowden (39) and Lucy Raspin (38).

Pike Hills will now go to Rudding Park where they will represent the York Union at the Inter-District division of the competition.

Paul Jordan-Worrall, York Union of Golf Clubs’ competitions secretary, said: “There’s a lot of good things about junior golf, one of which is the uncomplaining way they approach the game when faced with playing for hours under umbrellas and wrapped in waterproofs.

“This is a team event which was set up by England Golf years ago and each of the district unions in Yorkshire compete to get the right to go and play in the England finals.

“They used to nominate a club to send a team but when I became competitions secretary back in 2006 I started this inter-club competition to find the best team to go forward. It has been running since 2007 in its present form.

“We run either a four-man team, four-girl team or mixed team and, at the next level up, they play as a team of three. The national finals will be played at Frilford Heath in August.”

Winning captain Jagger said: “Hopefully this year we can go further. We are really looking forward to playing Rudding Park. It’s one of the top courses. Last year we didn’t manage to make it but we have ambitions to get to the national stages this time.”

Whittaker’s fine score in the individual meant he just pipped home player Alex Wear, whose 41 points will merely mean a reduction in handicap. Sandburn Hall’s Ben Singleton with 39 points and Tom Kelly (Fulford) with 38 were other notable scores on the day.
