MARCIA Grey and Wigginton Grasshoppers will contest the York Sunday Morning League Cup final after both negotiated extra-time to set up their April 19 showdown.

No fewer than 15 goals graced the brace of last-four games which proved cracking encounters.

Marcia Grey fell behind after half an hour to Station of Selby, but Leigh Dutton brought the Acomb team level two minutes later.

Station got in front again before the break but Carl Stewart popped up to level shortly after the interval.

Dutton then added his second, converting a Stewart cross, only for Myron Turbine to helplessly turn a ball into his own net with two minutes remaining to take the tie into the added half-hour.

Penalties were looming when a looping shot from Stewart was mis-controlled by the Station keeper who fumbled the ball into his own net and handed the tie to Marcia.

An excellent first-half performance from Wigginton saw them forge a two-goal lead by half-time against York Nomads Society after a neat finish from Jamie Green and a bullet header from Jordan Holt.

But the second-half saw a shift in the balance of power as Nomads grasped control with Tom Wheatland bagging a double-blast to send the game into extra time.

The first play of the additional time saw Wigginton take the lead, Jamie Green teeing up Dan Zambelli, who placed his strike in the bottom corner of the net.

Tom Derbyshire then extended he Grasshoppers’ lead with an unstoppable finish before Sam Thompson gave Nomads a lifeline with ten minutes remaining.

But five minutes later Jamie Willstrop sealed a 5-3 extra-time win for Hoppers.

The final will be held at the New Earswick ground on Sunday, April 19, with the kick-off at 1.30pm to allow the morning’s scheduled fixtures to take place beforehand.

Back on the division one league front, Hounds raced into a 3-0 lead against Albion Vaults after Gary Chapman (2) and Ben Yorke gave them a nice cushion within the first half-hour.

Despite many attempts from both sides, there was no further score as Hounds held on to collect both the maximum haul and the bragging rights. Britannia Tadcaster won division two’s only game of the day, edging out hosts at Hambleton by the odd goal in seven.

Cliffe were celebrating after a 6-0 conquest of Thorpe sealed the division three championship.

Initially, it was not all plain sailing for the soon to be crowned champions and they opened their account in fortuitous nature.

A Luke Durham cross evaded everyone in the box, including the dumbfounded Thorpe goalkeeper, to loop into the net.

Tom Hogg then missed several opportunities to increase the lead before the striker slid the ball into the path of Andy Kirkham, who finished in calm fashion to make it 2-0 at half-time.

A powerful Nathan Horner header made it 3-0 and Kirkham popped up with another long-range effort.

Substitute Nathan Parker headed the fifth before Durham set up Parker for his second and Cliffe’s sixth to get the title party started.
