A FINE back nine of 32 saw Easingwold pair Dave Tompkins and Paul Robson win the York Union of Golf Clubs’ Cross Trophy event at Aldwark Manor GC.

Wintry conditions meant the ten under par figures that normally dominate these events were never achievable and Tompkins and Robson took top honours with a round of 67.

Rob Taylor and Steve Arundel (York) and Trevor Bardy and Clive Forster, of the host club, also put together 67s but were runner-up and third respectively once the countback scores were added up.

At Pike Hills, Scarthingwell’s Kevin Morrall and Richard Best handed in a fine 65 just before the worst of the rain and sleet fell - just pipping early starters Neil Crapper and Chris Moss (York), who had carded a 66.

Malton & Norton’s Alan Hague and Ray Chapman also posted the same score, and finished third, with host club pair Paul Carrick and Wilf Akers collecting fourth with their 66.

A fortnight earlier, the Union’s 2015 calendar got under way with Cross Trophy rounds at Easingwold and Forest of Galtres. A late 63 from home club pair Trevor Boddison and Pete Walton gave them Easingwold honours - beating Heworth duo Nick Bissett and Paul Winterburn’s 64.

There was spectacular scoring at Galtres.

Heworth’s Dave Fogg and Duncan Bruce, third out in the morning, posted a superb 61 and that was to remain at the top for most of the day.

Having watched the live scoring over the internet through the day, they returned to the club for prize giving at just about the same time as Keith Davies and Andy Russell, of Malton & Norton, posted their 60 to snatch the honours.

Best and Morrall collected third place with the best of the 63s.

In the hunt for the Trophy, the aggregate competition is closing up. Malton & Norton made more gains on leaders Fulford and are now only six points behind. York also closed on the leaders and are 11 adrift.

Pike Hills and Heworth swapped places for fourth and fifth but are probably too far back to catch the leaders.

The final two rounds take place at Forest Park and The Oaks.
