York City swoop for Jake Hyde

Jake Hyde in action for Barnet against York City

Jake Hyde in action for Barnet against York City

GOAL-HUNTING York City have launched a bid to enlist prolific Barnet marksman Jake Hyde.

The Minstermen have agreed personal terms over a three-year deal with the 23-year-old striker, pictured, as manager Nigel Worthington bids to end the goal drought that effectively stalled the bid for play-off promotion from League Two just last month.

However, because Maidenhead-born Hyde is under the age of 24, a Football League tribunal will have to determine a compensation package between City and Conference Premier outfit Barnet.

If that is finally resolved then Worthington will have secured a front-man he has watched several times and who he admires and reckons to have the marksmanship skills to beef up City’s attack.

City issued the following statement over the proposed move for the 6ft 1in tall forward, who gained his first England ‘C’ cap against Latvia while he was with the Bees in their return to the fifth tier last season.

“York City Football Club is delighted to have agreed personal terms with Jake Hyde to become a York City player on a three-year contract,” said the statement.

“As Jake is under 24 years of age, a compensation package will be due to Barnet Football Club.”

Hyde, who started his Football League career as a trainee with Swindon seven years ago, was put up for sale by Barnet at the finish of the season just ended after being offered a new one-year deal, according to Bees boss Martin Allen.

Said Allen: “Jake has expressed a wish to play at a higher level and his goals over the past two seasons can make that happen.

“We are placing Jake on the transfer-list with immediate effect to see if there are clubs in the Football League who will pay the necessary compensation. If no one comes in for him, then he will be a Barnet player next season.”

City chief Worthington has recognised Hyde’s predatory talents by pressing the club’s move for the striker. After leaving Swindon in 2009, Hyde had a brief stint at Weymouth before joining the Bees later that year.

Six goals in 17 outings led to a short time at the former Hayes & Yeading club before he went to Scotland. After just over a year north of the border appearing for Dundee and Dunfermline, for whom he notched nine goals in 17 outings, he returned south to link up again with Barnet.

In Barnet’s ill-fated 2012/13 relegation campaign he topped the North London club’s goals with 26 from 56 matches. Hyde again led the Bees’ plunder charts last term, scoring 12 times in 27 appearances.

NW finally got his man? We were rumoured to be scouting him last summer, another hungry young striker adding to the great potential we have. Just need a couple of midfield/wide men and then sort out the RB position, hopefully Banjo signs or another loan spell for O'Neill?

Reading between the lines it looks as though Barnet are hoping for a decent fee for their player. City could have some bargaining to do at the tribunal. There will always be a bit of a gamble with any player that you sign, but lets hope that this one will be successful. Remember the last "prolific goalscorer" that we signed from a Conference club. That was Ryan Bowman, who we signed from Hereford United, but unfortunately he has struggled to find the net in Division Two.

Seems a good signing. Good age, has scored goals at L2 level (and in a struggling side which is even more impressive), and will provide the physical attributes needed in L2.

Only seen him play once against us (I think he came on as sub and scored the winner if I recall) so can't really comment too much but hopefully he will form a good partnership with Fletcher assuming he will be first choice.

Hopefully this will provide a spur for Bowman to improve as I still think he can prove to be a decent player for us but needs to step up and show more. I still think the horrible misses against Wimbledon and Portsmouth destroyed his confidence.

With Jarvis also in the squad we should have decent firepower for next season. Key for me will be getting Fletcher back fit ASAP.

Potentially an excellent signing. There will be real competition for places which is good and it is unlikely Fletcher will be fully match fit for the start of the season so a chance for Jake, Bowman and Jarvis to compete for a starting place. Keep up the good work NW & Jason Mc.

Would love to see Jonjo O'Toole (Bristol Rovers) at City. He wants away but don't know how high he (or rather his agent) is aiming or if he would be too expensive for us. He is certainly a proven player at L2 level and what we need.

Best of luck to Jake Hyde - 26 goals in their L2 relegation season is a fair haul.

His scoring record looks good and he's young. For anyone looking for big name marquee signings, let them stick to the Premiersxxxx hype and nonsense. I prefer proper football where the players work for a living, not where they earn mega deals for image rights. And I've zero interest in the (corrupt) FIFA World Cup - I'm looking forward to the start of League Two with massively more interest!

The "stumbling block" might be the fee we will have to pay Barnet - all depends on what the FA tribunal decides and how much NW & Co. want him.

liked the look of him a couple of years ago and really did think City should have moved for him at the time. he is a real poacher and with the options of Fletcher, Bowman and Coulson we should start netting on a more regular basis.
three-year contract is understandable for a player who's lived down south for a while, he would no doubt have pushed for that as well with having to re-locate. good work so far by Worthington, we need Banj to sign on....any update on what's happening there?

I think when you went to the races you got TANKED UP and didn't know where were, IT HAPPENS, I hope you had better luck that me. Winners I couldn't pick my nose. but i'm having a bit on ROMSDAL in the DERBY, he's about 20/1 at the moment. The owners have have paid £75k to put him in and Richard Hughes is up.

Seems like a decent signing, assuming we can afford the fee once its decided, based on his goal stats. We have to be realistic, we cant compete with some other clubs in L2 regarding playing budget and wages so the strikers that have several clubs chasing them, or the ones we all want, are often going to be out of our reach. Just hope this one turns out better than Bowman & McDonald. I've watched Bowman closely and he isnt up to it, his close control is bobbins and he isnt a natural finisher. At least we have moved early and the lad is right age and stature at 6 foot 1.

I hope I'm not starting to be controversial , because I don't want to be. But surely you aren't talking about Bowman and McDonald in the same breath. Bowman has scored I think 8 goals in 30 odd games, whilst not world beating, is not that bad, and much better than Calvin Andrew,s , who we were all happy with,( including me). Mc Donald has scored 0 goals from 0 games, which is exactly the same record as yours truly has in a City shirt.

If O'Toole's off to Cheltenham, he'll be at York by the end of the January transfer window anyway.

Cheltenham is on pretty much the same latitude as Luton, Stevenage, Braintree and Colchester. It's southern.

He's been involved in 40 matches ,2 penalties and 6 more in out play., I cant see anything about the lad that leads me to conclude he's going to cut it next season,

Very interesting that people are dismissing Ryan Bowman after 1 full season in league 2. The lad is only 22 and players need time to develop and play the way the manager wants. Give the lad time, I for one believe he will improve and contribute more on the pitch this coming season. He has hunger and commitment, the qualities Nigel wants. I am sure he will prove the doubters wrong

As already mentioned Bowman also missed at least two absolute sitters, which happens to every striker from van Persie down - nothing to do with "not being able to cut it at League 2 level". If those two had gone in he would have 10 for the season and people would probably not be questioning his scoring record.
