York City boss full of praise for on-loan Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Nick Pope

York Press: On-loan York City goalkeeper Nick Pope On-loan York City goalkeeper Nick Pope

NICK Pope was bid a fond farewell by York City boss Nigel Worthington following his final appearance for the club.

The on-loan Charlton goalkeeper will return to The Valley next season, where he is expected to now challenge for the Championship club’s number one shirt.

Pope was excellent again during last night’s 0-0 Sky Bet League Two play-off semi-final draw at Fleetwood that saw the hosts cling on for a 1-0 aggregate triumph.

But Worthington admitted that he will be looking elsewhere this summer for competition to contracted former, first-choice Michael Ingham.

The City boss said: “Since coming in, Popey has taken pressure off the back four. He settled in straight away and has loved living in York and being at the football club.

“That’s a big thing for a young lad so far from home and he’s done fantastically well. I will certainly be watching his career with interest in the future.

“It will be no surprise to me if he goes back to Charlton and gets in their team.”

Outstanding keeper who made an immense difference to our season. I have nicknamed him the 'Velcro' man as everything sticks.......
Really look forward to seeing how his career develops. Despite the fickle nature of the football industry surely he has a long and prosperous career ahead of him at levels to which YCFC can sadly only dream about.
Don't think that a single City fan would begrudge him a 10 year contract here and now. One of the best keepers at City in many a long year.

Agreed. Nicky Pope pope pope. Immense and unparallelled contribution to our great season. Wonderful consistent performances, best young keeper I've seen in years. Reminds me of the young Peter Shilton at Leicester. Confident and in control, unflappable and brave. Even yesterday he kept us in the match at least twice, and saved a one-on-one near the end. The amazing thing is, becaue it was him, I thought he would. Great prospect, so good luck Nicky Pope! We'll be watching you!

Brilliant keeper who clearly loved it here and helped us so much. In return, I hope this gets him into the number one slot at Charlton and I'll be watching them closely if he does.

I hope he reads the comments, as he has so much admiration from the City support. Great lad, great keeper.

Agree with all the above comments. Great keeper and commands his area which we haven,t been used to. I expect to see him in the premiership soon and it would not surprise me to see him play for England eventually. NW seems to have given up on retaining Nick but will surely land another good ,strong keeper who will also command his area.

I'd also like to say a word about Ben Davies. In the first half of the season I was hugely concerned that opposition teams had identified him as a real weak spot in our, team. Two things that he always had in his locker were a cultured left foot and the heart of a lion. I swear to God that he would tackle a brick wall! But I was worried nonetheless.
Not sure at all what he did but from around New Years Day he just became a better, more solid player.
PNE sent us a youth player but are getting a proper league player back.
Genuinely I would love City to sign him, I can think of no bigger compliment than to state that he could become the best LB since the days of Phil Burrows way back in the 70s.
Charlton and Preston should certainly reap the benefits of their loans to City in the coming years. Don't suppose they'll give us them for another season?

It's a shame he's left, and the loan system has been vindicated in Nick's case. But, If the scheme is approved of introducing another league tier for Premiership reserve teams it could all disappear. Players like Nick will get their matches playing in that league and teams like York will lose out.

Totally agree. everything that happens in English football is to the premier clubs in mind, The new suggestion is typical of the FA / FL.

Well done young Pope. You will be sadly missed at Bootham Crescent next season. You came out for the corners and the long throws with some authority and gave the defence great confidence. You're still a little raw with clearances but that is only a slight blemish. I have been watching the team since 1945 and I would place you in the top handful of keepers in City shirts. Tommy Forgan the last living player of the Happy Wanderers remains the top keeper to wear City's green jersey.

City played so well at Fleetwood and deserved better luck in front of goal.

When we signed him I said on here two coaches in London told me he was a class act but I didn't realise then he would be that good, there is another down there of the same mould, who I will be passing on to the club,

It's news to me that we loved Krysiak! He only played 2 Conference games for us and went off injured in the second to boot! Towards the end of the season he was dropped by Exeter (and look where they finished) and was then released on a free - why therefore would he be such a great acquisition? The guy Mildenhall at Bristol Rovers is highly rated and with them now in the Conference who knows?
