MICHAEL Coulson is determined to stay top of York City’s assists table until the end of the season.

Only former loan player Luke O’Neill has now created as many goals for team-mates than Coulson during 2013/14 even though the 25-year-old winger has only started seven games.

He was also frozen out completely, failing to even make the bench for 14 games between mid-September and November, but his last-minute cross for Wes Fletcher’s winning goal at Fleetwood on Saturday represented Coulson’s fifth assist of the campaign.

On his quest to carry on providing chances for the side, the ex-Scarborough and Barnsley flank man said: “Finishing the season with the most assists at the club is definitely the plan for me, without a doubt.

“I think one season at Grimsby I set about 18 up, so it’s all about me providing and scoring goals because I want to score more as well. I’ve set a few goals up in the last few weeks and feel like I am doing a good job for the team.

“Playing out wide, your job is to set goals up and I get nearly as much pleasure from setting them up as I do scoring them, especially last-minute ones like the one on Saturday.

“That was a big buzz for all the team.”

Coulson added that his assist tally has only been made possible by the predatory instinct of City’s strikers.

All of top-scorer Fletcher’s last three goals have seen Coulson make the telling final contribution, while he teed up Ryan Bowman against Dagenham earlier this month and also provided the cross that Shane Cansdell-Sherriff headed past his own goalkeeper to earn City a point at promotion hopefuls Burton in December.

“We have got some great strikers here who all want to score goals and they make the right runs,” Coulson pointed out.

“For me, it’s just about putting the ball in the right area because I know they are going to be there.

“That’s what happened on Saturday when Wes got across the first man and produced a great finish.”
