York City conjure last minute winner at Fleetwood Town in League Two

First published in Sport

TOP scorer Wes Fletcher pounced in the last minute as York City snatched a 2-1 victory at Fleetwood Town in Sky Bet League Two.

Fletcher's 12th goal of the campaign - from Michael Coulson's cross - sealed the Minstermen's first ever win over their Highbury hosts.

The away side had earlier taken the lead when Will Hayhurst's wind-assisted corner was turned in by the Cod Army's Conor McLaughlin.

However, Fleetwood cranked up the pressure with the wind behind them in the second half and eventually forced an equaliser, substitute Mikael Mandron netting from close range on 72 minutes.

The victory ensured Nigel Worthington's men immediately bounced back from Tuesday's disappointing 2-0 home defeat by high-flying Chesterfield.

City have moved up to 13th in the table in the wake of the victory.

Fantastic result and wholly unexpected but just what we needed after Tues. Sounded like a real battle with both the conditions and opponents but performances and results like that in the face of adversity should give everyone a real sense of satisfaction.

There will still probably be people moaning on here about something but all that matters is the result.

As I've said before its all about building slowly and results like today will come more often as we continue to progress. I just hope that the players and management get the plaudits as much as they got hammered after Tues.

13 points from our last 7 games since the Bury game is a great return and there's no reason why we can't keep that going with a run of games coming up against a lot of teams in and around us.

Lol... You wanted Nigel sacked on Tuesday (using Capital Letters). You also believe Chris Smith would do a good job in charge, and he couldn't even defend properly. As for the other moaners (including tantrum boy/girl here), give yer heads a shake and be patient. As I've said from day one (to lots of stick), Nigel will make our club a far better one!

If you backed York City you'd realise the team is infinitely improved in terms of quality since Worthington took charge, you'd realise he's trying to consolidate City into a solid football league club on one of the smallest budgets.

You'd realise this takes time, You'd back the team and the manager when things are tough, when they lose against one the top teams in the league. You'd realise that people like Worthington have forgotten more about football than we'll ever know. The comparison will Mills is moot, the team was awful defensively and the majority of players were clearly not of league standard. Worthington saved the club last season and now he's building on it.
Give him time, respect and support.

Well it really is a funny old game. Today was so much better than the last two matches. Perhaps the gale force wind was a leveller in our favour but fair play the team really put in a shift.
First half was even Stevens when we had the gale behind us but a lack of quality with the final ball thwarted us until the fortunate opener right on HT.
It was obvious at HT that we were going to come under enormous pressure in second half and I admit that I didn't think we would come through.....and that feeling amplified when they equalised.
Real credit to the back 5 in particular McCombe and Lowe, they perhaps made the difference as I just don't think any mix of TY, Parslow or Smith would have had the aerial presence to see that through. Parkin is a monster and such a handful. I also call out Pope, who despite looking culpable for the goal really impressed with his positioning , speed from his line and his kicking against one hell of a gale.
Penn was better today, and Fletcher as ever put in a good shift.
I still feel that Carson is lucky to be in ahead of Coulson and that point was well made with the build up to the equaliser.
The inconsistency is bewildering but these are surely 3 bonus points that hopefully we can kick on from.
Re the lucky jumper - 100% away record from the Cobblers and the Codheads so it will be going to Plymouth...

Penn was better today, and Fletcher as ever put in a good shift. I still feel that Carson is lucky to be in ahead of Coulson and that point was well made with the build up to the equaliser. The inconsistency is bewildering but these are surely 3 bonus points that hopefully we can kick on from. Re the lucky jumper - 100% away record from the Cobblers and the Codheads so it will be going to Plymouth...[/p][/quote]Sorry winner not equaliser - clearly still in dreamland! 23rdApril1966

No complaints about that result. Won't get many tougher fixtures than that, all credit to NW and the team. Anyone 'waiting for the moaners' - maybe tuesday was worth moaning about and today is worth celebrating? Some people (shockingly) can change their opinions based on how well City play...
You gloating cretin, you're always quiet when it suits you but you come back like a rash when you think there are bragging rights. Sad, deluded little man. I am one of the (apparently rare) individuals on here who can change their opinions based on evidence, rather than idiots like you who 'decide' things (i.e. not to like Mill or to have some sort of hero worship NW) and can't change for any reason. And once again, you have nothing to say about the match! Surprise.
Your name should be 'goldfish', as you have a very short memory (and a somewhat limited mental capacity). You know I was right about Foyle - you know I was right about Mills - you know that I predicted that we would stay up last season - you know that I said that we would string some results together when many were predicting a Mills-esque style slump etc... Fortunately, there are other posters who know that all of this is true. You have an appalling attitude towards posters who know more than you, and that's a shame as City need as many fans as they can get. There's no gloating from me, just opinions that I've stood by from day one. Unlike you, if I'm ever wrong I'll apologise, where as your preferred method is to rant and moan like a royal baby. By the way, if you don't like the '£17 a gulp' as you so eloquently put it on Tuesday, buy a premier league club shirt and shout at the TV in a pub like a lot of other local football 'experts' do.

You hit the nail on the head Yorkie69, as I have said many times previous, if fit ,Coulsons name, in this squad, should be first on the team sheet.
Maybe we should refer to the position of Team Manager and associate the recent description, 'clueless', enough said.

Excellent three points assisted by playing staff in their prefered positions on the park.Well done NW and the lads as it could have gone the otheway but didn't, you have set the bench mark and now the question is, can you attain it more often than in the past.

Credit where it is due, well done.

Beat the weather, beat Fleetwood and NW beat the moaners. Great result in conditions more suited to kit flying. Coulson came on and hurt Fleetwood, excellent cross for Wes - their defence left absolutely flat after the ball went in. Our back three were excellent - man mountain Parkin showed his experience but we were able to cope with his enormous bulky frame at set pieces. (no room for the keeper with him in the goal mouth) I'm sorry to say it again NW 1 - moaners 0. Overall we mastered the conditions better than Fleetwood, played a waiting game and grabbed the three points in injury time - don't feel as if we pinched the three points - how many time has it happened to us at the death. Almost went for a 'Cod' and chips on the way home.

Utter nonsense. If that were even slightly true we'd all still be 'backing Mills', even though he clearly wasn't up to the job in the end. I back York City, and only York City. Managers come and go. THAT is what being a true football fan is about.
That's a two faced comment if ever I read one. your one of the MOANERS I HAVE IN MY LITTLE BLACK BOOK. you turn more time than a ballet dancer.
This has become a forum for those who support NW and those who have grave concerns about him as a manager.

The truth is we all want York City to do well and climb up the league table. Nobody expects miracles, just steady progress.

The Feetwood result was fantastic and all cedit to the manager and th players. However it does not excuse the display against Chesterfield.

Players played out of position.
Players clearly unhappy about their role in the team.
Manager sounding defeatist before a ball had been kicked.

A summary of the last 3 games.

v Hartlepool. Average display and didn't win many fans.
v Chesterfield. Awful performancewith no positives.
v Fleewood. Wonderful team performance.

Goals for 2
Goals against 5
Points...3 out of 9.

Reality check over.

Over the moon with that result but a long way to go due to extra games played cheltenham is a massive game, for me this must a clear message sent to Worthington let other teams worry about us not other way round, fleetwood at home 1 up front and chesterfield at home to many defenders games were lost b4 we got on to the pitch and that is a bitter pill to swallow. Anybody noticed the poor run Wycombe are on,Torquay changed manager and have started winning, plus Northampton new manager and players signed especially Alan Connell, going to be tight this year

Yes, we need to be set up to be attacking, aggressive and proactive - none of these silly holding formations that usually fail - let us dictate the game and play with a good tempo, like we did against Pompey and Scunthorpe.

Have said before and will say again. We are very much a work in progress team. NW trying to instill a team work ethic which for the large part has been evident. I feel we do lack a certain creativity at times but if we play with tempo we can match most teams. Pretty football didn't stay the course with Mills even if I did prefer it. I see us finishing mid table this season but kicking on next year once the team has matured together.

As for Coulson it's a case of NW using his squad. It was evident that Coulson was beginning to burn out at the end of matches. Bringing in hungry loan players ensure that they give 100% trying to prove they make the grade. Let's not forget hayhurst gets the assist for the first.

Anyways onwards and upwards. Need to keep pressure on teams with games in hand by picking up points. 15 to go to that magical 50point mark. COYR
