YORK CITY boss Nigel Worthington declared himself pleased after his side held another Championship outfit to a draw at Bootham Crescent.

Following the 0-0 share-all with Leicester City, play-off semi-finalists last season, the City chief professed to be “delighted” with the way he side kept their shape and passed the ball.

“I was very pleased. I thought we kept it well and were nice and sharp,” he said. “When we play quicker, we are a better side and I was delighted.

“There was a real awareness about us and plenty of good things at both ends. We created some reasonable chances at the top and, equally, we had to do a job at the other end.”

When asked if he would have liked his forwards to have tested Foxes ’keeper Conrad Logan more, Worthington said: “We are trying to create down the flanks and in the middle.

“I thought Ryan Jarvis and Richard Cresswell looked a useful pairing up the front. We’ve scored three goals in pre-season and all have been through good passing, good movement and a quality finish.”

First-year scholar Callum Rzonca was pressed into action as an additional substitute for the last ten minutes after Ryan Bowman, who came on himself at the break, had to leave the pitch with a cut head.

Having already used all his substitutes, Worthington said referee Ross Joyce told him he could not bring on someone he had already replaced.

“He’s a first-year scholar and I think he’s the first one Richard Dryden (youth-team coach) came across. It was a bit of a shock to the kid but he came on and did well.”

Worthington added that Wes Fletcher was “coming along well” after suffering an ankle injury during Saturday’s draw with Blackpool but could not set a time frame for his return, while he added that Lewis Montrose, who didn’t appear either in that game or last night, was struggling with a thigh injury.

“Wes is improving day by day and Northampton is the target,” he said. “We won’t risk anything before that and, if doesn’t make that, hopefully it will be soon after.

“Lewis has got a thigh strain that happened last week in training. We are at such a stage in pre-season that we are not prepared to risk anyone and not have everyone available for ten day’s time.”
