York City held to goalless draw with Aldershot Town in npower League Two

YORK City beat the weather but they were unable to find a way past npower League Two visitors Aldershot Town in a 0-0 stalemate.

The game went ahead after a morning pitch inspection thanks to the efforts of groundstaff and supporters clearing snow from the covers that protected the Bootham Crescent surface in sub-zero temperatures.

The match itself was not the greatest spectacle as both sides struggled to carve out chances, with the Minstermen seeing an optimistic penalty shout waved away in the first half when Matty Blair tumbled in the box.

After the break, the Shots' best chance narrowly cleared Michael Ingham's crossbar from 18 yards.

New signing Ben Everson made his debut as a second half substitute, replacing Jamie Reed in the 71st minute, but he was unable to make an immediate impression.

The draw leaves City in 15th place in the npower League Two table.

The Bootham Crescent clash was one of only three fixtures in the division to survive the cold snap, with Northampton beating Burton Albion 1-0 and Wycombe earning a 1-0 home win over Dagenham & Redbridge.

The result isn't so bad in itself - Aldershot are 4th in the League 2 form table - but it was a dull game to watch. We showed flashes of skill and desire, but mostly we just 'sank to their level' of ugly 'hoofball' style football. The less of that we see at BC, the better.

The club did well to stage this match, but the game was a huge disappointment. A real dour performance from City with only one decent shot on target throughout the game (from Potts). We seemed to lack width today and just pumped high balls up to Walker, but he was no match for their big defenders. A point is better than nothing though.

Could't get to the game due to the weather so i listened to the legend B.P.on the radio.Sounded dire but all praise to Gary Mills keeping City mid table. What a great effort.Survival has to be the aim and what an achievement if we stay up.Thanks to the board for supporting the club financially over this period of no home games. On a sad note would someone tell that loud mouth in the Main Stand who obviously is not a true supporter to keep his derogatrory comments to himself as he does nothing else but moan.He spoils the otherwise excellent commentary on the radio of the game. This sort of person is not wanted at the ground and should stay away.I'm sure he knows who he is and he should be ashamed. What a big mouth he has !
Well done Gary Mills with another well earned point.

Very disappointing result after having won on their ground 2-0 early season. We need to score more goals at home, especially against the lesser teams in division. Some tougher games coming.

Very pleased to have come away with a point. Everson looks like he might be half decent but we're going to have to improve if we want to finish in the top half of the table this season.

As for the moaners, they're always welcome as far as I'm concerned -we need their gate money!

Sorry not good enough today ( at home again ) . We could have played all day and none of our forwards would have hit a cows ar*e with Lanrey banjo .

I'm puzzled that our new striker would have been paid more if he'd stayed in Iceland than here in League 2 ? Most of the Premier League teams up there are in towns and villages no bigger than Poppleton and Tadcaster.

I hear theres some good playerd up in the Faroe Isles and Shetland Gary .

Last point why not stick Fyfield up front . That is a serious point .

Not pretty today but then we have taken four points off an established team in the division who will most certainly not be relegated this season....glass half full in my eyes! I also thought that the new kid looked better than expected and was impressed by his pace and positioning, however, I suspect (hope) that we'll drop back to the Cheltenham formation for next weeks trip to Gillingham and we might not see him for a while...

No width, no crosses, no attacking threat from us and of course, no goals! Probably missing Chambers and Coulson but currently, our attacking threat is limited and it would be nice to provide the squad/fans with a shot in the arm, by signing a decent striker before the window closes. Visiting teams must have passed the word that if they press and condense our play, we are containable. We need more attacking options and abilities to counter this. Aldershot were very comfortable today and we posed them very few problems. Let's have a positive reaction at Gillingham next Saturday! COYR.

Oh dear, if this match had been off me and the wife were going to see Les Mis this afternoon. Unfortunately, it beat the weather and was on. Surely, even Russell Crowe's singing would have been better than that. There was one shot on goal from each team. Other than that it was a total waste of time. We simply must get someone in who knows how to score goals, otherwise we will be dragged into a relegation fight.

I feel a bit disappointed for the folk who worked so hard to get the game on, not a great tribute to their hard work still we have played so much better sometimes & not got a point. Given how the table looks any points are valuable, everyone probably has their own motm mine would be Blairy his attacking run was a rare bit of individual creativity in a generally turgid encounter, just thought he switched sides to shore up Fyfield who was not having a great day which is a shame as he was giving their full back a few problems as he had to back right off to avoid getting killed for pace.
What did everyone think of Everson?
He seemed to me to have some nice touches but was not really integrated into the system, just hope he has the spark to put the ball in the net under pressure as we are barren in that regard currently Walker is so busy fending off defenders fouling him I just do not see him scoring frequently enough. Better days to come I feel Come on City!!! Lets not do a Southampton as they look pretty ridiculous given how well their manager did I had thought he was destined to manage a national side in the fullness of time strange business.

Reed managed two things right today - shirt right way round, and his boots on the right feet - enough said. Not interested, no effort, positional play was poor - never looked to chase any through ball - as always looked over weight and unfit. First touch a pass to the opposition. When subbed he couldn't get off quick enough - unlike their players.
Ben Everson looked good - a couple of nice touches - could have scored - lets see more. Could be just what we are looking for.

Looking at the table dispassionately, the play-offs (and the relegation zone) are both still well within reach, so the season is far from over in that respect. We have 18 games to make up 6 points to close the gap above us, which is an achievable aim provided we don't lose any of our more valued players, and our new signings/ returning injuries make an impact. Our results have also been improving more-or-less since the end of November, and our defense is far less leaky with McGurk back, so you could argue that our league position will improve.

The realists could justifiably say that we've been sat in mid-table for months with very little change in our position, and that's how it's likely to finish - couldn't really argue against that.

I personally can't see us fighting a relegation battle, although obviously it's not impossible yet. We just haven't been 'dominated' by many (any?) teams this season in a way that would set alarm bells ringing.

The optimist in me sees us stringing a few wins together and finishing 7th by the end of April, but maybe more likely to finish in the 11th - 16th range of the table.

I felt we were a lower midtable team at the start of the season and still think we will finish there. Nothing has changed for me, we don't have enough up front and the defence was never strong enough. We have been unlucky to lose the wide men but Walker is never going to score a sack of goals at this level and we simply don't have anything else, Mills will just never drop him.I would say we are a good three or four players away from a genuine promotion team.

The main objective for York City is to still be a Football League club next season. And I am quite hopefull that we can do that. But quite frankly I am amazed when I read about fans saying that we can still get into the play-offs. I have done a bit of coaching (certainly not FIFA level) but it doesnt take a genius to know that we are not promotion material this season. I agree that Div 2 is a wide open league, with no really outstanding teams. But any team with a strike force as toothless as York City, can not seriously be rated as promotion hopefuls. I therefore have to agree with a previous poster, saying that we are three or four decent players short at the moment.

Personally I think Barry Parker is a legend!
On the point of formation and players I personally would shift reed up to the middle as a target man if anything he's no wide player. I'd also shift walker on the left , he's built to be a winger and can always cut in on his right for shooting?
Good luck to Everson, we need a new exciting striker to show us what he's made of!

We've been unlucky with injuries to Coulson, Chambers and MaCready. However, at least these players will be appreciated when they return.

I think we are a lower mid table team at present without the resources to push for promotion. To be fair, I'm happy with that. A couple of years of consolidation and hopefully gradual progression is a realistic goal.

My main concern is how many of the current key players are out of contract this summer? I think Ingham is signed for another year but what about Blair, Kerr, Walker? I would expect the majority of the squad contracts are up for renewal with league status salaries expected or offered by other clubs.

This year should be for consolidation back in the main league - we did not win the Conference last year and we do not have good enough players to gain immediate promotion to higher levels. We should be trying to build a squad of good players for the future and keep well clear of the drop zone.

We have a number of players that certainly divide opinion amongst us fans (Parslow, Smith, Walker, Reed, Challinor etc...).

Whilst Chambers can show flashes of quality, more often than not he's far too wasteful and regularly gives the ball away or loses it.

I think we've looked better recently, owing to keeping possession for longer spells.

I think next summer will see a far bigger turnover of the playing staff, Mills had his hands tied to a certain degree last summer with players still under contract. I don't see the majority of the squad been out of contract as a bad thing because many of them are not good enough to make the next step up if we want to be looking at a league one level push next season.
Even right now I can see Challinor, Parslow, Kerr, Reed, Smith, Fyfield, Blanchett going while Walker, Paddy, Blair have all found the step up tough. Add in the fitness levels of McGurk and Oyebanjo and its going to be interesting. Not that's just my opinion and I'm sure many will disagree on certain players the fact is we are still playing with a near total conference team and that's going to change in my view budget permitting.

Phil, Leeds says...

Very poor game and if we continue to play long, high balls up to our lone striker then please let's sign a big guy in the mould of Rankine to be more effective than Walker. If we're going to continue to play Walker then let's at least play to his strengths. Those that think we are still a live promotion side really need to get real - we just aren't good enough at home as 4 wins from 16 games in all comps confirms.
Thought Chris Smith had a good game, Potts was easily the best in midfield and only Blair looked any threat up front. We need to employ different tactics at home and I'm sick of saying this.

YorkCityLuke says...
1:56pm Sun 20 Jan 13

The thing is though, we're not far off being a promotion contender. No matter how hard it is to believe, we're only SIX points from the play-offs, with well over half the season played. I think it's fair that people would doubt that we'll get there this year, but the only solid fact that we have to go on is the current league table, which says that the play-offs are still a realistic outcome. Everything else is just opinion. I know it's a waste of time thinking over 'what ifs' in football, but imagine if Carlisle hadn't conceded a soft free-kick against Northampton to let them equalise in a game they should have been locked out of- that would have left us only 4 points adrift. Imagine if we'd managed to put a goal past Fleetwood at their place, as we probably deserved- that would leave us 2 points short of the play-offs. There are plenty of games this season where a lot of fans have left wondering how we didn't get more from the game. Ok, we're not quite good enough at the moment, but we're not so very far off play-off form really.

PDH says...

Shame we did'nt win would have saved having to read so much NEGATIVE twoddel.
It was not the ideal playing surface for playing football regardless of being passed fit to play on. More of a ideal surface to get a bad injury on. No one did so that's a bonus.
Despite their league position Aldershot are a team presently on very good form, last 6 games before yesterday w4 d1 l1 so a draw is not the end of the world.
Reedy got the start lots of people have been asking for, the result of that was there to be seen.
Everson got on the terrible pitch to give him a run out and showed promise.
We are still in a good position in the league we have just come up from non league then spending very little money (because we do not have it) and competing in the football league with nearly the same team that got us up last season.
We have found out that it is a total myth that there is very little in the teams playing in the top half of the blue square premier and league 2.
So all in all we are where we are and all things taken into consideration are doing rather well.
Hows that for some POSITIVE twoddle.

As people have said we finished fourth in the conference and have made do for the most part with a conference squad.Compare us to Fleetwood who finished top,and i think signed nine players close season to strenthen pretty much all of whom would have been outside of our budget on either transfer fees wages or both, and have signed another four this month so far.All that considered i think we are doing pretty well,if we were still within six points of a play off place at the end of next month and even a glimmer of a chance with a late run(like Crewe last year) well id say it had been a good season.Of course there is still plenty of work to be done to make sure we dont slip towards the wrong end too.

Not that's just my opinion and I'm sure many will disagree on certain players the fact is we are still playing with a near total conference team and that's going to change in my view budget permitting.
Agree we could do with a clear out, my worry is whether we can afford to bring in much better. A mass exodus followed by a struggle to get players like we did in the summer could be disastrous

Out-thought at home again. Opposition managers know if they push up and defend high we will resort to high balls to the shortest centre forward in the division. We looked best for the few minutes after Paddy came off and briefly we went 4-4-2 with Reed as the target until inexplicably Mills took him off and put on the new boy. If you are going to give Reed a chance at least do it in a position where he should play not as second fiddle to Walker, who was , yet again totally anonymous. They looked most threatening when Rankine came on and put himself in the big hole in front of Fyfield, space a number of sides have exploited. I'm not certain we need wholesale changes. We are a big centre forward, and a change of tactics at home short of being a half decent side. To paraphrase the great Eric Morecambe "we have all the right players, but not necessarily in the right order"

Spot on! Key word, however, "budget"

Now that's what I call twoddle! There was absolutely nothing wrong with the pitch - it had been covered all week and was soft and frost free. I'll be quite happy if we finish mid table and that will be a decent first season back in the League I agree.

A boring goalless draw except that the lack of goalmouth action meant it didn't even reach that level of entertainment.
The new lad looks more mobile than the player he looks like replacing and the video clips show him to have two decent feet. As with all strikers he needs service but he probably has more ability to go past a man than Reed.
The stars of the day were the groundstaff and those hardy soles (sic) that got the game on.

Can't agree; we looked most threatening when Everson replaced Reedy who, other than fouling their players, falling onto his backside and making half-hearted attempts to head the ball, contributed nothing - don't know how he dare draw payment after such a shocking performance. Everson played Matty Blair in twice and nearly got the winner when he back-heeled the ball. I have always liked Reedy but, if he is only going to go through the motions, his contract should cancelled.

Yep, We were dire.......but let's have some true perspective here
compared to Russell Crowe's Javier we were bloody magnificent. Ha Ha

As for most of the season, no threat where it matters, in front of goal. Even when we dominate elsewhere, as we often have, direct chances have been few and far between. The problem is obvious, we hardly ever win high balls up front, whether from crosses or balls lumped forward from the back. The passing game is great, but it is not always an option and sometimes the only available choice is the long ball in the air to the front men, but in our case that is simply giving possession away 9 times out of 10 to the opposition's defence, and then we are again under pressure. Simple answer we need someone up front who can compete aerially, possibly alongside Walker who would then come into his own as the goalscorer we know he is.
