YORK City midfield man Steve Bowey will be drawing on his time as a Bristol Rover ready to face old enemies Bristol City in the FA Cup tomorrow.

The showdown already has everything the FA Cup is famous for - a non-League club drawn at home to a high-flying League One side with all the potential for an upset.

But Bowey will be bringing something a little extra.

He said: "I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the draw. It's obviously nice to play against an old club but to play against your old rivals is even better and it's the FA Cup."

His time as a Pirate came ten years ago and was restricted to mainly reserve and the odd substitute appearance. But he still knows the passion of the derby, having seen his team equalise late on on their rivals' doorstep.

He said: "You don't need much extra fire when you play in the FA Cup because the potential is massive - but I'd like to get one over on them.

"Bristol City are the favourites to go through and we have got nothing to lose so we have got to go out there and enjoy it.

"We are playing with confidence at the moment and there's always one or two underdogs that go through - and there's no reason why that can't be us."

Bowey's FA Cup exploits have taken him to the quarter-finals in Scotland and he has also reached the second round more than once south of the border with Gateshead.

But when it comes to cup highpoints, winning the Scottish Challenge Cup with Queen of the South would certainly be up there - along with the goal that helped guide them into the final.

"It was a fantastic strike," said the midfielder, who has only found the net once so far in York colours on his debut against Stevenage. "It was from 30 yards out and it was the third goal in a 5-3 win that drew us level. I got goal of the season for that. It was one of those where as soon as you hit it you know it's going in."

And he admits to taking the occasional trip down memory lane.

He said: "I like to get my goals out on the telly and just remind myself that I can do it. It just gives you that little bit of belief watching yourself score over and over again.

"It's also nice to show the kids and the wife."

It's that kind of experience that boss Billy McEwan is hoping will rub off on the rest of the Minstermen, and Bowey's advice is simple. He said: "Basically it's 11 v 11 at the end of the day. There's 22 of us on the pitch and we have got to see it as that.

"We are on the same pitch as them and we have just got to have confidence and play together.

"We also need 110 per cent confidence and concentration because these teams can punish you for the slightest mistake."
