York tennis player Eva Pears, aged ten, reports on court duty with Wimbledon hero Jonny Marray.

WIMBLEDON men’s doubles champion Jonny Marray came to David Lloyd in York and took part in a kids’ tennis clinic.

Around 30 children, aged from four to 11 years, took part in the hour-long session.

We did a few drills that Jonny Marray used to do when he was a child. We practised forehands, volleys and smashes.

Jonny first demonstrated these drills and we tried our best to copy them.

The best tip I learned was to bend my legs for more power.

Later on, we played the game, ‘King of the court’, when some of the children – including me – got to rally with Jonny and tried to win points.

It was unusual looking over the net and seeing a Wimbledon champion on the other side.

We also did some serves. There was a machine to measure the speed of them. Mine was 34mph; the best by a child was 68mph and Jonny’s was 91!

We got autographs and photos with him at the end – it was a great experience.
