THAT was the year that was boss for York Thai-boxing gym Legions.

Finishing off the season with three title triumphs at the recent Cage Confrontation Seven show in York, the Legions Club’s total for the year was an impressive 22 wins out of 27 contests.

Said Dave Phillips, who runs the gym with owner Al Chambers: “It’s been a great year.

“We could not have asked for anything much better.

“We have had five champions over the last 12 months, including a boxing champion in Luke Atkin. As a gym we’ve really come to the fore.”

The three Cage Confrontation victors were Tom Reynard on his competitive debut, Liam Goodwin who won an area title to complete a three fights and three wins 2012 record, and the impressive Liam Brough, whose fourth win out of five contests in the year had yielded a brace of championship belts.

The club was also active in raising cash for charity. A six-hour skipping marathon realised £3,000 of which £2,000 went to the York Hospital special baby care unit and £1,000 to the Help For Heroes charity.

Already for next year there’s a sponsored sparring show over six hours to raise money for charity, while three of the club’s champions – Brough, Goodwin and Chambers – are lined up to compete on the Ring Series Bill in York on February 9.
