CITY of York Hockey Club men’s I bounced back from 3-1 down to beat hosts Alderley Edge I 4-3 in the North League premier division.

The victory over their newly-promoted Cheshire hosts was York’s third of the season and leaves them in fifth position after six games of the campaign.

Alderley Edge got off to a good start, hitting a post in the first minute before taking the lead after eight minutes.

City ’keeper Jon Chappell made a couple of fine saves and his side scored a counter-attacking leveller through Lee Cuffe.

There were no more goals in the first half, but the hosts forged into a 3-1 lead after only five minutes of the second half.

That prompted City of York to raise their performance and within three minutes they pulled a goal back with Rich Jenkin scoring from the tightest of angles.

It was 3-3 15 minutes into the second half when a penalty corner was converted thanks to a deflection by Mike Carter. Rich Jenkin then found Stuart Smyth unmarked in the circle with a fine reverse-stick pass and he put the visitors in front for the first time with seven minutes remaining.

City of York II maintained their 100 per cent record and leadership of Yorkshire League division one with a 2-0 home win over Normanby Park I.

Normanby Park had the best chance of a goalless first half, but they were denied by a fine stick save by ’keeper Jonathan Doyle.

York started the second half well and they finally broke the deadlock when Danny Ellwood’s short corner effort was deflected in for an own goal.

York doubled their lead when Peter Perryman burst through from midfield, drew the ’keeper and left captain Alex Fletcher with a simple finish.

Man of the match Doyle was called upon on several occasions as Normanby Park tried to get back into the game.

City of York III went down 1-0 at Worksop to end their unbeaten start in division two.

Rob Prentice was denied by the ’keeper in York’s best chance of the match and Worksop got the winning goal two minutes before the break.

The man of the match award was shared by defenders Dominic Firth and Chris Scoffield.

In division three, City of York IV were swept aside 7-1 by Airedale I.

Zach Moore got York’s only goal, while Brendan Grant had a goal disallowed from a well-worked short corner.

Free-scoring City of York V were 5-1 victors at Halifax III in division five north.

They forged into a 3-0 lead thanks to an own goal and two strikes from Mark Moisley.

Moisley completed his hat-trick just before half-time and, although Halifax got one back when Steve Sandford scored an own goal, the four-goal margin was restored by Nick Carter with 15 minutes remaining.

City of York VI let their hockey do the talking as they beat Mirfield 5-1 in a physical battle in division five north.

Mirfield took the lead, but York battled back to take the points thanks to a Will Broadbent hat-trick and goals from Joe Ball, Richard Tanner-Smith.

A 4-0 win at Airedale II puts City of York VII joint-second in division six north.

Harry Heyes scored an early opener from the top of the ‘D’ and he made it 2-0 with a reverse-stick strike into the top corner.

Will Bowen and Andy Jenkins combined to create a chance for James Hogg to score the third after the break. Top scorer Heyes rounded off his hat-trick late in the game.

Third-placed City of York VIII crashed to a 3-1 defeat at home to second-placed Ben Rhydding VII in division seven.

York trailed 2-0 at the break and the visitors added a third before Danny Vaughan scored after a goalmouth scramble.

A fine performance from ’keeper Tom Starbuck denied Ben Rhydding a greater margin of victory.

City of York IX were on the wrong end of two big umpiring decisions as they went down 2-1 in a closely fought match against Tadcaster II in division seven.

The match looked to be heading for a draw with 12 minutes remaining, but Tadcaster scored with a penalty flick after a misdirected shot heading wide of the goal struck a City of York player.

City of York appeared to have hit back immediately with a well-worked goal, but the strike was controversially ruled out and Tadcaster swept upfield to score.

With two minutes remaining, Andy Dent converted a chance at close range, but it was too little too late for York.

City of York X (Badgers) fought back to claim a 4-3 win over Thirsk.

York were 2-0 down after 18 minutes, but levelled before half-time thanks to two goals from Alex Martin.

James Fitton nudged his side ahead ten minutes into the second half and, despite Thirsk capitalising on some sloppy defending to equalise, a good pass into the ‘D’ from Sam Engleman was neatly finished off by Andrew Hyams to give York the win.

Goalkeeper Peter Harrington was the man of the match.
