A HORRIFIC crash on a main road east of York left one man dead and another injured.

The two-vehicle accident happened on the A1079, one mile outside Shiptonthorpe, between Pocklington and Market Weighton, at about 6.30pm last night.

The impact of the collision flipped one car on to its side, and the occupant, who was believed to be in his fifties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police closed the road for several hours to carry out investigations, with traffic sent on lengthy diversions. Two fire crews and two ambulances attended the scene, and one other casualty was taken to York Hospital with minor injuries.

Station master Keith Evans, of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Two vehicles were involved in the road traffic collision - one of them was on its side and one of them was on all four wheels.

"The paramedic on the scene informed the crews that unfortunately a gentleman in his fifties who was in the vehicle on its side had passed away and was classified as a fatality at the scene.

"The crews made the vehicles safe and left the scene, with the police continuing their investigations."
