THE issue of disability access at Selby railway station has been raised with the Rail Minister by the town's MP.

Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty, met with Baroness Kramer last week to discuss the issue, and ask for improved access for those unable to walk across the current bridge at the station.

At the moment there are no lifts for wheelchair users to get to platforms two and three, and the station was not among 42 chosen by the Department for Transport to have step-free access by 2019.

Mr Adams said: "I, along with other rail users was disappointed that we missed out on the funding earlier in the year so I thought I’d go and put Selby’s case direct to the minister. The minister has recently visited our district and was aware of the problem at Selby, whilst she explained that there were hundreds of other stations in a similar position.

"The government is spending hundreds of millions on rail electrification which is very positive for rail users and Selby station will require updating as a result so it seems like the perfect opportunity to put in a new bridge and lifts which will be a great result for Selby commuters and travellers. The minister was very sympathetic to my appeal and has promised to write back to me in the next few days with her thoughts."
