THE new £238million green power plant will prove to be a “big boost” to Selby’s economy.

The EU’s decision to award the cash to Drax Power Station, which will help them build the White Rose Carbon Capture and Storage Project, could create up to 4,000 jobs in the industry.

Once complete, the 426 megawatt “clean coal” power plant would provide enough energy to power 630,000 homes.

Councillor Mark Crane, leader of Selby District Council, said: “It creates jobs and is a real shot in the arm for the economy of Selby district.

“I’m hopeful that a number of jobs will come to the people in Selby, and the training Selby College does with Drax means we should have young people in the area in a position to get these jobs, and let me tell you, they are well paid and quality jobs.”

James Dunwell, director of Selby Chamber of Trade, said: “Any substantial investment in the district is welcome, and it’s all very positive.

“It’s potentially going to be a centre of excellence for green energy, which is going to be a big boost for the area.

“At one stage this looked in doubt, so to get it is excellent.

“There are opportunities there for jobs, and it’s a substantial boost for Selby and the surrounding area.”
