COUNCIL bosses in Ryedale say the district’s residents have avoided the worst of the downpours which lashed North Yorkshire last week.

Surface water flooding was seen in many villages and towns in the area, as well as roads after Friday’s torrential rain, leading to morning rush-hour traffic being disrupted.

Ryedale District Council said its four Streetscene teams issued 180 sandbags to residents with supplies already in place in villages also being used, but the weekend did not see fresh flooding problems reported.

“We quickly responded to calls from the public, and due to the speed the rain came down early on Friday, there were significant volumes of water in hotspots,” said Phil Long, the council’s head of environment.
