POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 21-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident on the A19 last night.

The accident happened on the southbound carriageway close to the Over Silton crossroads near Thirsk in North Yorkshire.

Emergency services, including the Great North Air Ambulance, were called at around 5.50pm.

It is understood the woman suffered multiple injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

The collision involved a silver Kia Sorrento 4 x 4, driven by a 50-year-old West Yorkshire man, and a silver Ford Ka, being driven by the 21-year-old woman, who was from Middlesbrough.

The Sorento was travelling south and the Ford Ka was travelling from the Over Silton junction.

The road was closed in both directions while collision investigators examined the scene and vehicles using the A19 were diverted via the village of Kirby Sigston.

It was re-opened shortly after 11pm.

Police are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area at the time who either witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle prior to impact to contact them.
