THE project to return Pickering Railway Station to its former glory has won an award.
The scheme to replace the roof of the grade II listed station was named the Best Commercial Building / Scheme under £1 million at the Local Authority Building Control North and East Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards 2011.
Contractor Houlton completed the project to reinstate the roof on time in May after battling against some of the heaviest snowfall in decades last winter.
The newly-installed roof, which replaced a canopy structure built in 1951, offers much greater protection against the weather for the 300,000 visitors to the station each year.
Bryan Draper, North Yorkshire Moors Railways trust company secretary, said the new roof heralded the beginning of a new and exciting future for the railway.
The roof will be officially declared open in a ceremony to be held next month.
