GLORIOUS sunshine, record crowds and marquees packed to capacity made yesterday’s 92nd Thornton-le-Dale annual show a bonanza day.

Organisers hailed it as a record breaker with car parks packed by just after midday as crowds reached some 12,000, with an estimated 3,000 boosting the figure during the afternoon.

Chairman of 20-plus years Martin Blythe said: “It was a brilliant day. Entries in many classes were up, the crowds piled in and the rain stayed away – we couldn’t have wished for more.

“I can’t remember the ground being so full by midday.”

Pressure on space was an issue, he added, with trade stands having to be turned away because of the demand, and all the show rings in use from early in the day.

“But we didn’t want to see the showground crammed to spoil a pleasurable day out for the public,” said Martin.

Recruiting sufficient volunteers has become a problem, but the show committee had seen many people, often commuters, who had moved into the village, rolling up their sleeves to help prepare the showground, even though they had no connection with the local farming or horticultural businesses.

“The show certainly puts Thornton-le-Dale on the map and it’s great for the village because the pubs benefit, and so do the shops and restaurants,” said Mr Blythe.

There were similar sentiments from this year’s show president, Charles Hill, whose family have been part of the village life for several generations.

The retired butcher, who has been attending the show since he was a child, said: “It has become one of the leading one-day shows in North Yorkshire. Over the years it has expanded with more stock classes and entertainments in the rings." "It is praised by outsiders as a well-run and friendly show and that brings in both exhibitors and the public,” said Mr Hill.

Among the many highlights of the show were the goat classes, said to be even bigger than those at the Great Yorkshire last month, and the shepherds’ crooks and thumb-sticks which saw hundreds of entries from some of the country’s leading craftsmen.

Chief steward Bill Gent, of Cropton, said: “We had 13 classes and attracted entries from a wide area because the winners qualify for the British Stickmakers Guild’s national championships – the Grand Prix of crook-making.”
