POLICE have released dramatic footage of a high-speed car chase that ended with a teenage driver crashing through a hedge.

The five-minute video, published online, shows a North Yorkshire Police car tailing 18-year-old Hamza Hussain between Malton and Wrelton.

Hussain's blue Renault reached speeds of up to 95 miles an hour as he flew through rural and residential areas in Ryedale on wet roads.

The teenager, from Manchester, was banned from driving for two and a half years and given a 12-month suspended sentence at York Crown Court last week.

Hussain was also ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and was given a three-month nightly curfew.

He admitted dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop for the police and driving without insurance or a licence after crashing at 3.19am on October 18.

Traffic constable Paul Moon of North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group, said: “Hussain put the lives of himself, his passengers and other road users in grave danger.

"As Judge Batty said, he could so easily have caused a fatal collision.

"He should think himself very lucky that he was not in court to face more serious charges.”

The video sees police trail Hussain from Malton to Pickering and then towards Kirkbymoorside on the A170.

He is seen driving on the wrong side of the road and jumping red lights as the police car follows him with blue lights on and siren blazing.

Hussain tries to turn right to Wrelton, but fails and drives through a hedge.

The traffic officer says: "Crash, crash, crash, he's crashed at the junction."

Hussain had originally been spotted driving erratically in Malton, prompting the police car to turn on its blue lights.

He failed to stop and a chase ensued with the teenager hitting speeds of 80mph on Old Malton Road before heading north on the A170.
