A NEW “meals on wheels” service has been launched in Easingwold to help isolated, lonely and vulnerable people over the age of 65.

Easingwold and District Community Care Association has started the scheme after the withdrawal of the WRVS Meals Service.

The organisation’s Robert Webb said: “We canvassed what other hot meal providers are available locally – and found there is a real need for this type of service.

“Providing a regular, hot, home cooked – and nutritious – meal plays an important part in keeping people healthy as well as reducing hospital admissions.

“The service will also provide a friendly, social contact for people who may be confined to the house and act as a regular check to ensure that people are safe and well.”

Volunteer drivers will deliver a freshly cooked hot, two-course meal to people in the town – initially two days a week – at a cost of £6 per meal.

“In time the association hopes to expand to cover villages in the area and take in more days.

The scheme has been made possible thanks to a £2,000 grant from the Hambleton District Council Community Grants Programme.
